Tutoring review by Amrutha in Lexington, VA
We reviewed scatter plots for an upcoming quiz, and I guided the students through assigned HW. We then worked through extra problems from a website of math worksheets. There was a "challenge" problem that involved combining concepts from systems of equations, so it was good practice for reviewing previous concepts as well.

We worked on math, using the student's class materials as a guide. I brought test prep materials with me and used them to provide extra math problems for the student to solve. He was enthusiastic about working on this and seems to enjoy doing problems out loud with a partner. One strategy we used was to incorporate real-world terms into math problems so the student could understand what sort of relationship was being expressed, rather than simply memorizing the steps to solving the problem. We used boxing stats to talk about mean, median, and mode, for example.

Today the student and I reviewed the practice problems that I had given her to complete yesterday. She did awesome with these problems and had no trouble solving even the more difficult ones. We moved on distance, rate, and time problems towards the end of the session and will continue to work on this next week.

Tutoring review by Sissi in Lexington, VA
In today's session, we worked on writing and speaking. First, the student wrote a paragraph using the prompt: "Some people prefer to live in a small town. Others prefer to live in a big city. Which place would you prefer to live in?" We discussed how to organize a paragraph and how to use organization phrases. In addition, we also talked about how to get higher scores for writing and speaking. He also learned new words and practiced using them. Last, there is a paragraph for him to write before the next session. He will need to look up the new words that he wants to use in the dictionary, and also try to use organizational phrases in the paragraph.

Tutoring review by Jeff in Lexington, VA
Today we went over a Ch. 3 quiz and did a practice test for Ch. 3. The topics discussed included: scatter plots, regression lines, correlation, coefficient of determination, residuals, residual plots, and using the calculator to generate these things. Going through the practice exam, the student became more confident with the concepts she initially found difficult. I left her with some more practice problems to work on. She has a test tomorrow, so hopefully these practice problems will help her study for the exam.
