Christiansburg Tutoring FAQ

Whether you're a parent seeking a private educator for a younger student or you're a student yourself, Varsity Tutors will locate a qualified mentor who has the skill necessary to take your studies to a new level. Individualized tutoring is a great way to supplement a student's education. For instance, we can find a test prep tutor to assist you in building strong skills for comprehensive exams like the MCAT. Likewise, an instructor can review important study skills, fill in learning gaps, answer questions about homework or concepts, and more to help your student build confidence for their classes. Your student can even explore more advanced topics as well, which is great for students who are excelling in their class.

One-on-one tutoring for students in Christiansburg, Virginia, revolves around the student as an individual. Their instructor can create a learning plan that reflects their aspirations, strengths, areas of opportunity, and other qualities that can play a role in your student's study sessions.

How much does Varsity Tutors cost for students in Christiansburg?

Many things can impact the rate you'll pay for 1-on-1 tutoring for students in Christiansburg. One component we look at is the overall number of sessions you'll be arranging for yourself or your child.

For instance, you may pay a lower cost per lesson for your student to work on building solid math skills over the course of a school term than you would for a handful of sessions to prepare for the writing portion of the ACT. Another factor we consider is the qualifications of the instructor with whom you'll be working. As an example, you might pay one rate for your grade school student to practice their reading skills with a current teaching student as opposed to reviewing for the LSAT with a law school professor.

Which tutoring subjects does Varsity Tutors offer for students in Christiansburg?

Private instruction is available for just about topic, whether you're building skills for professional, academic, or personal reasons. For instance, you can build fluency in Japanese or other languages with a native speaker.

Today we worked on trig functions of angles on the unit circle. The student is comfortable with figuring out reference angles and computing the trig functions. We covered the unit; circle and graphing sin, cos, tan, and I will quiz her on those topics next session.

We wrote an essay about the definition of courage. The student struggled a little bit with explaining the conceptual ideas behind the essay, but did quite well when he was able to come up with his own examples to explain the definition. I think his creative writing is much stronger than his technical or nonfiction writing. It seems that most of the outside of school reading he does is fiction.

Tutoring review by Sarah Brooke in Christiansburg, VA
Today I worked with Student 1 first. We reviewed his math homework together. It was adding multiple decimals. His math is very good, but his handwriting is a bit uneven and this causes him to make mistakes. He needs to make sure to line up the decimals and the digits in the correct places, use a subtraction line to keep things straight, and write his numbers clearly. Every single time he got the wrong answer, it was because he couldn't read what he had written or hadn't lined it up correctly. Then we did the fraction part, and he did well. Next, I worked with Student 2 on some VERY hard problems that his teacher wanted him to do for the whole theory of problem solving. We chose three and worked them out.

The student has a group test on Wednesday. We went through all the sections that will be covered on that test. She had no questions and did well with all the problems I gave her. She completed her homework and did some review with me.

Tonight, we reviewed homework problems on adding fractions. I told the student to start writing all of her steps down on paper rather than doing them in her head. I also noticed that she would mix up her addition and subtraction signs sometimes, so I think it would be helpful to have her check the original problem after she writes it down on paper to make sure it is written correctly.

Tutoring review by Laura in Christiansburg, VA
The student's class is working with absolute value problems this week, so we started there. Although she was quick to grasp the basic concept of an absolute value, working through the problems showed she was missing a lot of background concepts (probably from last year). We made a good start on fractions, but it will take a while to catch up with her class. It was obviously hard and scary for her to admit that she didn't know how to do something and try to do it anyhow. I could tell she was really trying, and I'm pleased with how much progress she made in this first lesson.
