Session Summaries by Science Tutors

Science Tutoring review by Steven in Syracuse, NY
The student was working on Ohm's law, resistance, and resistivity, and we came up with some strategies to try to make those problems more straightforward. She seemed to take to the work very quickly, and with some practice, I think she should do all right with this material.

Today the student and I went over her science materials before her test tomorrow. The student has a good understanding of the subject matter, she just wanted to reinforce that she had memorized everything correctly. She needed help labeling the different parts of an amoeba and a euglena, so we made sure to spend extra time on that subject and she was able to identify these by the end of the session.

Science Tutoring review by Samantha in Syracuse, NY
The student and I worked through an article on genetic variants in autism spectrum disorders for her neurobiology course. We read through the article together, discussed main points, clarified advanced content and worked on a summary of the article. She now understands the paper, is confident in writing a 200-word summary and a series of questions (about methodology and implications). She is sending me a draft of this summary tonight.

Intro session, discussed what's going on in both her classes. The student said she needed more immediate help in Algebra 2, so I went ahead and helped her review a quiz. We covered Rational Expressions in a variety of forms, specifically direct/joint/inverse variation. The student took notes, and established a method to approach any question in this lesson. Good first meeting!

Science Tutoring review by Caitlyn in Syracuse, NY
Awesome day! We reviewed a bit of vocab/drew pictures for each word and then did all of the student's homework for science. At the end, she asked to work on some more word problems relating to velocity/speed, so I was making up problems for her to solve. At the end, she actually seemed to be having a lot of fun reading the graphs and solving the problems (and making up stories about what was going on in the graph to get those distances/speeds). She has a really strong grasp on the material, especially visually (she was able to look at a graph and tell me right away what was happening in it). She does need to make sure she's including units with her answers, but other than that she is doing amazingly!

Science Tutoring review by Andrew in Syracuse, NY
I reviewed the student's recent quiz on plant structure. The student has a firm grasp of concepts, as shown by their perfect essay score. I reviewed the student's recent lab and explained to her how to obtain more points by being more responsive to the assignment tasks, e.g. phrase question/hypothesis, address data limitations/appropriateness of materials/methods, ethical/environmental/safety concerns. We reviewed photosynthesis and details of light dependent/thylakoid systems I &II and light independent/Calvin cycle/stroma reactions. This was in preparation for Friday's exam. The student seemed to have a better understanding when processes and reactants were described in terms of intracellular location and parallel comparisons to cell respiration/Krebs cycle were drawn.
