How can a tutor help you master the PSAT?

The preliminary SAT, also know as the PSAT, is becoming a more common requirement for students to test for, and many organizations, such as the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT), use it as a qualifying exam. In addition to helping students find out just how ready they are for college, the results of the PSAT may assist your child in finding out their strengths and weaknesses, and what areas need additional work, before they sit for the SAT. With the help of a dedicated tutor, your child may achieve a greater level of success than they ever thought possible!

The PSAT is given every year in the fall, usually around October, and is comprised of math (including algebra), as well as evidence-based reading and writing sections. The test usually lasts about 2 hours and 45 minutes, and was updated in 2015 to reflect changes that were made to the SAT. The PSAT does deduct points for incorrectly answered questions, so having a PSAT tutor could help your child work towards the scores they need to succeed.

Session Summaries by PSAT Tutors

PSAT Tutoring review by Courtney in Kansas City, MO
In our session we focused mostly on the math section with some reading toward the end. She does very well with the math section, approaching problems intelligently. She can often explain her process better than I can. She struggled with the fill-in-the-blank math questions, so we will continue to work on those. She did well in the reading section, but still lacks some confidence. We are continuing to work on how to approach less "concrete" questions that cannot be as easily reasoned.

PSAT Tutoring review by Nick in Kansas City, MO
Today we started going through the test prep book. We went over specific tips for critical reading and sentence completion, and general tips for math (trial and error, drawing diagrams, etc.). I also gave the student another practice test to complete at his own pace with the goal of combining it with his first practice test to create a "strengths and weaknesses" guide.

PSAT Tutoring review by Denise in Kansas City, MO
Today we reviewed the student's most recent diagnostic exam to get a sense of where she is struggling most and where we can continue to improve her score. We spent a large portion of our time working on fine-tuning her strategy for the reading portion of the exam.

PSAT Tutoring review by Molly in Kansas City, MO
Today we began focusing on the math section. We talked about special numbers and strategies for solving word problems. The student struggles to solve problems that use the math skills she knows in new or different ways, so we will continue to practice creative thinking for these types of problems.

PSAT Tutoring review by Naama in Kansas City, MO
Today we went over the entire math section of the PSAT-- with some help/clarification on just a couple problems, the student nailed it-- I think he's going to do very well. We'll resume with the writing section next week.

PSAT Tutoring review by Jennifer in Kansas City, MO
During this session, I started with an overview of the test for the student. I showed him the practice test website, and he made an account. Then I talked to him about what he needed the most help with and took some notes so I can make some lessons for the future sessions! He expressed he needed the most help with vocabulary, so I showed him a website where he can make online notecards to prepare him for the test. He then took a diagnostic test, which I had prepared from the test in the book. After that, we went through all of the problems that he had gotten wrong or skipped, and I helped to explain them to him.
