During this session, the student worked on his science fair project by finishing his last round of muffins. Apparently, the first three batches turned out well! His parents also acquired a cooking scale, which will help him determine the density of the different kinds of muffins.

We continued working on optimization problems. We then moved on to differentials and applications. Lastly, we started related rates. I emphasized the difference between constant and actual variables and methods of solving equations (reducing variables, making proportions, grouping terms).

Tutoring review by Brandy in Liberty, MO
We looked over an assignment he had due on Friday, which was a story prompt about being given a time machine and traveling either back or forward in time. It had several detailed questions, and his teacher also seemed to want the story to use the elements of literature they had learned about in class (inciting action, rising action, climax, etc.). We started by talking about when he wanted to go to, and after much debate, he picked World War 2, to see the Manhattan Project! He was very enthusiastic about this, and he started working on a narrative about sneaking past the guards, meeting Oppenheimer, and what he would see, say, and do. He had some difficulty at first because he tried to begin it like it was an essay and couldn't figure out where to go past the initial summary, so I suggested treating it like something that is actually happening, more like a story. The directions were a little unclear on if it was supposed to be a descriptive essay or a story, but several of the questions were geared to work better as a story than an essay, so I encouraged him to write it as a story because he found that much more engaging, and it gave him a clearer sense of what he was supposed to be writing. I think it will be a very good story! He was about halfway through his first draft when we finished the session, and I am confident he will have no trouble completing it.

Tutoring review by Ashley in Liberty, MO
The student said she has a test tomorrow. The class had reviewed in class, so no study guide was officially given. Using the online textbook, we reviewed the different theorems that she needs to use in proofs. She has improved tremendously on the speed of solving problems, and her confidence is also showing improvement. She should do well tomorrow.
