Recent Raytown Tutoring Session Notes

Tutoring review by Kristopher in Raytown, MO
The student completed her first homework assignment. The assignment primarily covered issues related to sampling, and how to calculate relative frequencies and the cumulative relative frequency. The session went well. She struggled a bit with some of the concepts early on but she appeared to be clear on how to perform most of the calculations by the end of the session. She also had some trouble with how to define and identify the independent and dependent variable. Similar to the calculations she appeared to have a good understanding of how to define these by the end of the session.

We discussed his last Biology test which we had studied for together. He did not do as well as on some of his other tests. He said much of what was tested had only been briefly touched upon in lecture, while the things that had been covered more in depth were not tested in detail. He will be doing test corrections to improve his score. We spent most of the session on Geometry completing an open-note quiz. He was confident on most of the material and knew Pythagorean theorem, special right triangles, and geometric means particularly well. He continues to develop better study habits and is much better about turning in his assignments now.

Tutoring review by Helen Joan in Raytown, MO
The student had a creative writing assignment he wanted to work on so we brainstormed ideas and he wrote a tale about a car that talks and wants to return to the toy store where it was purchased. I read his story aloud and we discussed one or two of the grammar/ spelling mistakes. I also attempted to suggest a couple of revisions, like a name for the car, but he was satisfied with the story and wanted to move ahead. He said he only needed a draft. For most of the session we played a rhyming game, some rhymes very simple and some more complex. He was willing to play the game and produced some good rhymes. A multi-sensory approach to working with language would definitely help him if he is willing. For a few minutes at the end of our session we played 31, a game he invented.

We worked on the grammar rules of quotation marks and practiced their application. We spent most of the session reading an article about illegal fishing and planning and composing an analysis on the article. The student is doing a great job with thinking critically about the text he is reading. He applies strategies in a consistent and thoughtful manner.

We went over the student's homework, which was more inverse functions and basic exponential/logarithmic algebra. The student had a very strong grasp of the material and completed his homework very quickly. It was the same as the material we went over the week before, only he had learned it in class this time.
