If you're an aspiring medical school student, Varsity Tutors can get you connected to qualified Portland MCAT preparation to help streamline your review. The MCAT is a comprehensive exam required by most medical schools. Even if your particular dream school doesn't require these test scores, other schools you are considering might. If you're preparing to apply to Oregon Health & Science University School of Medicine, the MCAT, or Medical College Admission Test, may be one of the toughest challenges you'll face in your path to admissions. While admissions counselors consider a variety of other factors when screening applicants, scoring high on the MCAT can help set you apart from the pack.
Whether you're just beginning your review or feel like your studies are lacking direction, Varsity Tutors has options for you. Participating in a Portland MCAT prep course can provide you with a dynamic online learning experience led by a qualified academic mentor. If you prefer the intimacy of one-on-one instruction, getting matched with a Portland MCAT tutor might better suit your needs. Both options provide you with top-notch test resources that will help you prepare for all the various elements of the exam. Regardless of your needs, we are confident that we can match you with qualified test prep that will both challenge and motivate you.
What can Portland MCAT prep help me review?
The MCAT is made up of four sections: Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems, Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills, Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems, and Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior. The MCAT is a strenuous test that spans 6 hours and 15 minutes, assuming you utilize all of the time provided. The sheer length of the exam necessitates effective test-taking techniques in order to work efficiently and confidently. The test is computer-based and requires you to answer multiple choice questions. Overall, the MCAT tests you on concepts that are deemed essential to prospective students' success. Here we will take a look at what you can expect to encounter in each section.
The Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems section requires you to solve problems based on your knowledge of chemistry, physics, and organic chemistry. This portion of the exam contains 59 questions that will test your understanding of the different mechanical, physical, and biochemical functions of the body and how they relate to the laws of physics. You will have 95 minutes to complete this portion of the exam. Combining a strong knowledge of the foundational subjects with reasoning and scientific inquiry skills is integral to your success in this section.
The Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills portion of the exam will measure your verbal reasoning, reading comprehension, and analytical skills by asking you to read and analyze scholarly passages. Having a firm grasp on the basic components that form a text, how to infer meaning from compositional elements, and how to integrate different aspects of a text to increase comprehension will help you succeed in this section.
The Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems section tests your knowledge of general chemistry, organic chemistry, introductory biology, and basic biochemistry. To answer the given questions, you must combine your knowledge of these subjects with your scientific inquiry and reasoning skills. Understanding the relationship between cell and organ systems and how they work independently and in concert to accomplish biological processes will help you navigate this section.
The Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior section will assess your ability to apply conceptual knowledge of psychology and sociology to issues such as social and cultural differences that influence well-being, working with diverse populations, and how psychological and biological factors influence perception and reaction, among other things. While foundational subject knowledge is important to succeed in this section, you must also demonstrate your scientific inquiry and reasoning, research methods, and statistics skills. You will be given 95 minutes to complete 59 questions.
How can Portland MCAT prep help me prepare for the exam?
Preparing for an exam as vast as the MCAT can be intimidating. If you're studying alone, you might be wondering which resources to trust and where to begin your review. Varsity Tutors offers two types of test prep: online courses and private tutoring. Let's take a closer look at the different benefits of each type.
Enrolling in a Portland MCAT prep class is a great way to diversify your studies. You will attend live sessions in a virtual classroom with other motivated peers. All classes are taught by a qualified instructor who has been thoroughly vetted to ensure that they can meet your needs. Participating in a collaborative online course means that you will have an opportunity to engage, troubleshoot, and strategize with fellow students. Having built-in social support can be both reassuring and motivating. If you are stuck on a particularly complex subject, such as chemistry, you can arrange a private time with your instructor to review concepts and formulas needed to advance your understanding. New two- and four-week sessions begin weekly, so you can begin whenever your schedule permits.
If you're seeking a more personalized learning experience, working with a Portland MCAT tutor might be a better fit for you. Working individually with a tutor means that you can customize your study plan to address your areas of opportunity directly. If you'd like to focus solely on the Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills portion of the exam, you and your instructor can spend your time working on reading and analyzing scholarly texts. We know that your schedule can be hectic, so your instructor can meet you online or in-person to provide you with greater flexibility.
How can Portland MCAT prep help me prepare for the exam?
Given the length and vast nature of the MCAT, you may feel like you're training for a mental decathlon. Let Varsity Tutors connect you with MCAT prep that can help you build the skills needed to navigate the different sections and elements of the exam confidently. Attending medical school is a noble pursuit, one that you probably aren't taking lightly. Let us help you invest your time and money wisely by getting you started with Portland MCAT prep that can help prepare you for exam day.

Students have so much pressure to perform well on standardized tests.
