Organic Chemistry Tutoring review by Samuel in Kansas City, MO
We did a complete chart of different reactions that the student has learned thus far. We worked back and highlighted the different reagents that are important to memorize. The student found it helpful to have it all in one place and to organize the reactions based on topics. I also made sure that he understood the thermodynamically and kinetically controlled reactions (1-2 substitutions and 1-4 substitutions).

Organic Chemistry Tutoring review by Nathan in Kansas City, MO
We went over Lewis structures: how to judge their quality, identifying major and minor resonance contributors. We spent some time on tricky Lewis structures and resonance problems. We talked about Pi-bonds and orbital hybridization. We went over a lot of material today and it is going very well. Next up is nomenclature and the first mechanism: radical halogenation. She's going to do fine. I told her to begin with the habit of accounting for every electron. That will guide her into mechanistic thinking.

Organic Chemistry Tutoring review by James in Kansas City, MO
The student and I discussed that she understands the concepts moderately but has difficulty with understanding, visualizing and drawing the individual intermediate steps in various reaction mechanisms. We discussed chair conformation and how rings can be formed or broken depending on the reagents used. One of the major mechanisms we worked on was ozonolysis that involves the very reactive O3 molecule creating hemiacetals and acetal substituent groups when reacted with. Many of the reaction mechanism problems used an "aqueous workup" which we discussed is the addition of water/acid (hydronium ion) that protonates/deprotonates the molecules involved in the reaction and is then regenerated to proceed the reaction to completion. We about reviewed reactions involving acetals and hemiacetals and multistep reactions.

We covered carboxylic acid derivatives and conversion to each of the different groups. We covered Claisen and aldol reactions and how to identify the products and starting materials for these reactions. I will send some additional practice problems.

We covered: Sn2 reactions; Sn1 reactions; and carbocation rearrangement through hydride shift, methyl shift, and ring strain relaxation shift via ring expansion. We also reviewed Fischer projection for determining chirality.

Organic Chemistry Tutoring review by Andrew in Kansas City, MO
Things are looking up! While this past exam grade was not the grade that the student was hoping for, it was definitely an improvement. Even in today's tutoring session, I am continuing to see that her grasp of the subject is getting stronger. As she and I work together, she gains more clarity on the areas where her professor has oversimplified concepts. There is more good news. Her most recent lecture was about benzene and aromaticity. Today's lecture only went over the characteristics of aromatic compounds as well as Huckel's 4n + 2 Rule. Her professor did not yet go over the reactions of benzene or nomenclature of benzene; however, the student still wanted to discuss nomenclature, so we did. I gave her a few notes about monosubstituted benzenes so that she will have some exposure to the multiple different ways that individual substituted benzenes can be named. After that, she reviewed part of a worksheet that the professor skipped because it didn't come up in lecture yet, and she did quite well. We even touched on heterocyclic compounds (which also did not come up in lecture yet) because of how smoothly things progressed today. Her confidence is definitely growing.
