The GRE (Graduate Record Examinations) is a standardized exam written to give graduate admission departments at educational institutions like Webster University and the University of Missouri Kansas City School of Graduate Studies a consistent way to compare applicants to one another. Programs vary in how much weight they assign to a score, but doing well can help you stand out in a crowded field.
Needless to say, you do not want to skimp on studying for this test. Thankfully, we offer two great options to help you build your study skills heading into the exam. First, we can set you up with a Kansas City GRE prep course where you can study in a classroom setting. Alternatively, we can find you a private Kansas City GRE tutor so that you can prepare for the test at your own pace. Either way, you'll get a great test prep experience thanks to Varsity Tutors!
What types of topics can I review during my Kansas City GRE prep?
The GRE is a digital exam that consists of three scored sections: Analytical Writing, Verbal Reasoning, and Quantitative Reasoning. Each of these sections is divided into separately-timed halves, so you'll write two essays and then handle two blocks of 20 Verbal and Quantitative questions in a random order. You have a total of 60 minutes to finish the Analytical Writing and Verbal Reasoning, while you get 70 minutes for the Quantitative section.
Let's take a closer look at what you should expect on each section:
1. Analytical Writing
The Analytical Writing assessment is broken into two different essay tasks. The first is called the issue task and requires test-takers to compose an original essay about a topic randomly selected from a list released prior to the exam. Since there are a finite number of possible topics, you can study for all of them so that you are prepared for anything the exam might throw at you. The second is an argumentative task demanding a critique of a provided argument. You won't have a heads-up on what you'll be working with on this section, so be prepared for anything! This section is scored on a scale from 0-6 and measures your written communication, reading comprehension, and argumentative skills.
2. Verbal Reasoning
The Verbal Reasoning section has three types of questions: text completions, sentence equivalence, and reading comprehension. Text completion items require you to fill in the blank of a short passage with the most logical option based on what you've read so far. Sentence equivalence questions work similarly, except that you only have a sentence to work with and need to select two correct answers. Reading comp items measure how well you can draw accurate conclusions from the material you read. This section is scored on a scale from 130-170 and measures your ability to infer logical information based on the provided material.
3. Quantitative Reasoning
The Quantitative Reasoning section also has three different types of questions: numeric entry, quantitative comparison, and multiple-choice. Questions may require arithmetic, geometry, data analysis, and algebra. Some questions may also require more than one response. This section is scored the same way as the Verbal section above and measures a test-taker's quantitative problem-solving skills and command of mathematical concepts.
In addition, your GRE may have an Experimental or Research section. Both exist so that the manufacturer of the GRE can try out test items that may appear on future exams. The difference is that Experimental questions are embedded into the Verbal or Quantitative sections without any indication that they don't count, while Research is a standalone section at the conclusion of the test. Neither is scored, so there is no need to waste any valuable study time on them.
What are some of the advantages offered by each of the Kansas City GRE preparations options Varsity Tutors offers?
If you opt for a Kansas City GRE prep class, you'll study online using a live virtual platform that makes you feel as though you're sharing a classroom with your teacher and fellow students. We vet every instructor thoroughly, so you can count on learning from a great communicator who really understands the GRE. Your instructor is also available for private study sessions if you feel as though you need extra help with a concept.
Many students are blown away by the benefits of sharing a virtual classroom with others preparing to take the test. The fact that you can all split the cost of expert test prep to make it more affordable is nice, but the collaborative learning environment that makes it easier to develop a comprehensive understanding of academic subjects is even better. You might look at another student's essay outline and discover a whole new way to approach a topic or swap test-taking strategies to help you save time on the test. For instance, jotting down some notes to quote on your argumentative essay task can spare you a search throughout the entire document for something you can use later on.
If you prefer to study in a one-on-one environment, a private instructor may be more your speed. A tutor can take the time to understand your unique learning style and design sessions accordingly to improve your study efficiency. You can also study at your own pace with a private instructor, whether that means briefly covering a topic you understand or doing a deeper dive on a challenging subject.
We also try to make both of our test prep products as convenient for you as possible. For example, we offer two- and four-week class sessions to make it easier to find one you can attend. We also start new classes every week so there's always a new class to join. Similarly, students who choose a private instructor can study online with our convenient Live Learning Platform.

I work to give all of my students the tools and strategies they need to be successful. As an experienced music teacher, this means developing critical listening and practice skills. For test takers, this takes the shape of understanding test and question format, strategies for breaking down complex material, and educated guessing. My goal is to make the test work for the way you think, and I excel in creative ways to relay this information.

After teaching college for eight years and moving to the corporate world, I want to use my experience to help others improve their skills and understanding of English, Speaking, Business and Government. During my spare time, I can be found at a Royals game, reading, exploring the Nelson or at the Lake of the Ozarks.... While I believe in an element of lecture, I much prefer discussion and working through tangible issues together - whether a real-life scenario, essays, or personal outlook. I believe in application of materials, and not regurgitation.
