The GMAT, or Graduate Management Records Exam, is a high-stakes test designed to help MBA programs identify applicants who should do well with a business curriculum. Each institution has its own standards, but local schools such as Capital University and Ohio State University - Fisher College of Business consider it one of the more important aspects of your application. The GMAT places a heavy emphasis on practical skills, making it different from standardized tests you may have taken in the past. What topics can I expect to cover during my Columbus GMAT prep?

The GMAT consists of a total of four sections: Verbal Reasoning (English Language Arts), Quantitative Reasoning (mathematics), Integrated Reasoning (practical), and an Analytical Writing Assessment (essay). There's some overlap between sections, but each serves an important function in determining whether the test-taker has the knowledge base necessary to succeed in business school. Let's take a closer look at which topics are covered on each portion of the test:

Verbal Reasoning

The GMAT's Verbal Reasoning section measures how well you understand the conventions of the English language. Questions on this section fit into three broad categories: sentence completions, reading comprehension, and critical thinking. Sentence completions require you to select the most grammatically-accurate choice from the options provided, bearing in mind that you're looking for concise answers that clearly convey a sentence's meaning. Reading comp questions measure how well you internalize what you read, including the ability to draw logical relationships based on the material. Critical thinking items assess how well you can formulate and analyze arguments and action plans. You have a total of 65 minutes to answer 36 multiple-choice questions. This section is scored on a scale from 0-60, with most students falling somewhere in the 6-51 range.

Quantitative Reasoning

The Quantitative Reasoning section measures your analytical writing, data interpretation, and quantitative problem-solving skills. Items on this section fit into two categories: problem-solving and data sufficiency. Problem-solving questions require test-takers to solve math problems based on data provided, measuring your ability to approach a problem analytically. Data sufficiency items measure how well you understand a problem, including the information needed to solve it. Some of the information provided to you may not be relevant at all, so don't assume that everything is useful just because it appears on the test! You have a total of 62 minutes to answer 31 multiple-choice questions on this section of the exam, and it's scored on the same scale as the Verbal Reasoning section.

Integrated Reasoning

The Integrated Reasoning section measures how well you can incorporate academic knowledge in practical problem-solving situations. There are four types of questions on this section: two-part analysis, multi-source reasoning, graphic interpretations, and table analysis. Two-part analysis problems require you to solve simultaneous equations or quantify trade-offs. Multi-source reasoning problems require the use of graphs, raw data, and textual sources of information in order to arrive at an answer. Graphic interpretations remember how well you can read different types of charts and graphs. Table analysis items measure how well you can work with spreadsheets on a computer. You have a total of 30 minutes to answer 12 multiple-choice questions, most of which demand more than one response. This section is scored on a scale from 1-8.

Analytical Writing Assessment

The Analytical Writing Assessment is a 30-minute essay requiring you to analyze an argument. This section serves to measure your communication and critical thinking skills. You could end up writing about anything, so it measures your ability to think on your feet as well. Fortunately, you're not expected to provide any prior knowledge in your response. Instead, your essay is scored on a scale from 0-6 based on factors such as topical analysis, organization, argumentation, syntactic variety, and how well you use the argument in your own analysis. It is highly recommended that you compose an outline for your essay, as 30 minutes really isn't that much time to plan and execute an effective piece of writing.
