You can also keep reading for more information on the MCAT and how we can help you prepare for it.
What's tested on the MCAT?
The Medical College Admission Test or MCAT is a standardized exam that is taken on a computer and that features a number of multiple-choice questions. Upon completion of the MCAT, you'll earn five scores. Four of these scores will come from the four sections of the MCAT and one score will be your total combined score from all of the sections. The total score you earn can range from 472 to 528 while the section scores range from 118 - 132. The MCAT's purpose is to test medical school applicants on the concepts that are important for success in the medical school environment.
The first MCAT section is called Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems. This section features 59 questions and has a time limit of 95 minutes. To do well here, you'll need to have a solid understanding of core topics in subject areas like biology and chemistry. The section's overall focus is on the function's of the human body's tissues and organs, as well as the chemical and physical principles that underlie the mechanisms operating in the human body.
The next MCAT section, Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills, has 53 questions. This part of the MCAT is concerned with assessing your verbal reasoning, reading comprehension, and analytical skills. You'll read a variety of written passages in this section that will focus on topics in social studies and the humanities. Your job will be to understand these passages on a deep level and then to answer questions about them.
The third MCAT section is called Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems. This part of the exam has 59 questions and it focuses on the processes that are unique to living organisms, biological and biochemical foundational concepts, and scientific reasoning skills. You'll need to have a strong understanding of things like general chemistry, organic chemistry, basic biochemistry, and introductory biology in order to do well on this MCAT section.
The last MCAT section is called Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior. This section also has 59 questions and a time limit of 95 minutes. This section's purpose is to examine the skills that you'll need to possess in order to serve a diverse population of patients. It also features questions about behavioral impact on health, mental health issues, and the human and social issues that are present in the field of medicine. The subjects you should review in preparation for this section are biology, introductory sociology, and introductory psychology.
The total testing time for the MCAT is around 6 hours and 15 minutes. However, you will be seated for about 7 and a half hours during the exam. This means that you'll also need to work on your testing stamina as the day of your MCAT approaches. It's also important to note that any section on the MCAT may include experimental questions that won't count toward your final score. You won't know which questions are experimental and which aren't so it's important to answer each question as if it would count toward your final total score.
