If you're a student at an institution like Canisius High School or P.S. 195 - City Honors School who is preparing to apply to a college or university, you may be required to submit an ACT score. The ACT is a standardized exam used in many college admission decisions. Created in 1959, it was designed to assess a student's college and career readiness. It measures one's academic achievement and knowledge of the various skills and topics taught in schools through the 11th grade. Buffalo ACT prep can help you as you work towards your goals.

What can a Buffalo ACT prep course cover?

The ACT takes about three hours to complete if you opt out of taking the Writing assessment. Taking the Writing assessment adds forty minutes to the total time needed to finish the ACT, not including breaks. The required sections are Math, Reading, English, and Science assessments. Each section varies in length and evaluates your retention of knowledge needed to begin college. Let's take a closer look at the various sections, starting with the optional Writing section.

If you choose to take the Writing section, you'll have 40 minutes to answer a single essay question. You will be given a passage about an issue along with three viewpoints regarding the issue. Your response will need to include your own opinion on the issue and analyze any connections between your own response and the provided perspectives. This is your opportunity to showcase the writing skills you have been taught in your high school English classes up until now.

The next section is the Math section. This hour-long section of the ACT contains 60 questions which assess you on your pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, and trigonometry skills. Questions in this section will range from numerical reasoning to data collection application analysis. Brushing up on the skills in your ACT prep course can help you have confidence as you work through the section of the ACT.

The Reading section of the ACT is 35 minutes long and contains 40 questions which assess your ability to read given passages and identify central themes and ideas. Here you will need to showcase your ability to determine word meanings based on context and differentiate between fact and opinion. An expert ACT instructor can help you practice summarizing ideas and understanding relationships between different texts.

The next section will assess your English skills with 75 questions, which you must finish within 45 minutes. In this part of the test, you will have an opportunity to demonstrate your understanding of the English language. Questions will involve sentence structure, punctuation, and grammar. Going over the style and tone of the English language can help you feel confident as you work through this section of the ACT.

The last section is the Science section which consists of 40 questions assessing your retention of the concepts learned in your biology, chemistry, physics, and earth/space sciences classes. In this section, you have 35 minutes to manipulate and analyze scientific data presented in various formats. You may want to brush up on your knowledge of the Scientific Method and other procedures of scientific investigation and experimentation.

No matter which of the skills you wish to focus on, an ACT prep class can help you work towards your academic goals.
