You will have just under three hours to complete all four sections of the examination, but not all of the parts are of equal length. Possible scores for each of the four sections range between 1 and 36 points.

You will also need to have an extensive vocabulary, be able to differentiate between facts and opinions, and have the ability to make connections between different texts.

You will have 45 minutes to answer 75 multiple choice questions on the English section of the ACT. The section measures your command of the English language. Some of the concepts you may want to study include sentence structure, style and tone of language, proper punctuation, topic development, and rules of grammar.

You will have 35 minutes to answer 40 multiple choice questions on the Science section of the ACT. You will be evaluated on your knowledge of biology, earth science, space sciences, chemistry, and physics. Some of the concepts you will need to have a broad understanding of include the scientific method and the ability to manipulate and analyze various forms of data.

If you opt to take the ACT Plus Writing, you will be evaluated on all of the previously mentioned sections as well as on your writing competency. You will have 40 minutes to read a prompt and then compose and write your response. The possible range of scores for this section is between 2 and 12.

Even if you breeze through one part with time left over, you will still only have the designated time for the next section.
