If you have a child who is attempting to enroll in an independent school, consider reaching out to Varsity Tutors for a Boston ISEE course. Students in the Boston area can benefit from an ISEE course that is flexible, accommodating, and informative. Whether your child is an elementary, middle, or high schools student, there is an ISEE course available to them that can meet their needs and help them work towards their goals.
The ISEE, also known as the Independent School Entrance Exam, is a test used to measure a student's knowledge as they apply for an independent school. Independent schools across Boston use this exam as a way to know if a student is at the academic level to keep up with their curriculum. If you want to help your student pursue a favorable school on this exam, consider enrolling them in a Boston ISEE prep course.
What does a Boston ISEE class cover?
When signing up your student for an ISEE class, you are signing them up for a comprehensive online class that covers all areas of the ISEE based on your student's academic level. The ISEE comes in several versions; an Upper Level version, a Middle Level version, a Lower Level version, and three Primary Level versions (Primary 2, 3, and 4). If your student is entering 2nd grade, they would take the Primary 2 exam. If they are entering 3rd grade they would take the Primary 3 exam, and students entering 4th grade would take the Primary 4 exam. The Lower Level exam is for 5th and 6th grade students, while the Middle Level is for 7th and 8th grade students and the Upper Level is for students entering 9th grade or above.
The Upper Level ISEE features five sections. The first is the Verbal Reasoning section. This portion of the exam includes 40 questions and allows test-takers 20 minutes to complete each question. The Verbal Reasoning section assesses a student's English skills through sentence completion questions and synonym questions. In a Boston ISEE class, students can review their high school level vocabulary, parts of speech, and suffixes from Greek and Latin to feel more prepared for their test date.
The second section of the Upper Level ISEE is the Quantitative Reasoning section. Here, students are provided 35 minutes to complete 37 questions related to quantitative math skills. The topics of the Quantitative Reasoning section including problem-solving, data analysis and probability, measurements, and numbers and operations.
Next is the Reading Comprehension section of the Upper Level ISEE. Here, students are given 35 minutes to answer 36 questions related to author's intent, organization and logic, main and supporting ideas, and vocabulary. Some concepts students should known include cause and effect, comparing and contrasting information, and how to find and use information from passages to answer questions.
The Math Achievement section of the Upper Level ISEE asks students 47 questions, which must be answered within 40 minutes. This portion of the Upper Level ISEE tests students on their math operations skills, including their abilities to solve word problems, work with variable and exponents, and find the area and perimeter of geometric shapes.
The final section of the Upper Level ISEE is the Essay section. Test-takers are provided one prompt and given 30 minutes to complete it. This section assesses a student's writing skills through their response to the written prompt. To prepare for this section, an ISEE class can teach your student to plan and organize a written piece, practice their grammar, and brush up on their spelling skills.
For students at the Middle Level, the ISEE has the same sections, timing, and number of questions. However, there are a few differences. In the Verbal Reasoning section, test-takers should know middle and high school level vocabulary, as well as parts of speed, and how to use word clues. The Quantitative Reasoning section is a little different on the Middle Level ISEE as well. This portion of the exam covers algebra, data analysis, problem-solving, numbers and operations, and measurement. To help a student prepare for this section, an ISEE class may go through operations involving variables, finding the length of a line, using the distributive property, and so on. For the Reading Comprehension section of the Middle Level ISEE, individuals should know how to find and use information from passages to answer questions, compare and contrast information, and infer information that is not explicitly stated. During the Math Achievement portion of the Middle Level ISEE, students are tested on their abilities to use a Venn Diagram, work with quadrilaterals and triangles, work with fractions, use ratios and proportions, and so on. Finally, the Middle Level ISEE Essay portion provides test-takers with a prompt on a topic of interest to students at the middle school level. Individuals can respond to the prompt and use this section as a way to tell a prospective school more about themselves.
Finally, the Lower Level ISEE is similar to both the Upper and Middle Levels as far as sections, timing, and number of questions, but this version of the exam has a few slight differences throughout. For example, the Verbal Reasoning section of the Lower Level ISEE tests students on context clues and elementary and middle school vocabulary words. The Quantitative Reasoning section tests individuals on estimation, comparison, and number logic, while the Reading Comprehension section quizzes children on their knowledge of style, language, organization, vocabulary, and understanding of main and supporting ideas. When it comes to the Math Achievement section of the Lower Level ISEE, students are asked to answer questions related to simple operations, estimation, decimals, percents, fractions, and symmetry. The final portion of the Lower Level ISEE, the Essay section, offers a prompt on a topic of interest to students at the elementary school level. Test-takers can use this portion of the ISEE to tell an independent school more about themselves.

At the core, I love learning and find it fun. In teaching, I try to convey that sense of fun to my students. I use a variety of techniques depending on my student's learning style, but I always focus on the fun of learning new things....
