If you are an Emory University student fulfilling your foreign language course requirements, an experienced speaker of Chinese hoping to refresh your skills, or even a high school student at the Lovett School, Varsity Tutors offers an Atlanta Chinese course that can have a positive impact on your language learning experience. Language learning can be tough, even if you already have a little background in Chinese, and a typical classroom curriculum might not completely encompass the difficulties one encounters when learning the language. One of the most important factors in succeeding as a Chinese learner is regular opportunities to practice the language in both written word and conversation. An Atlanta Chinese course can provide you with access to not just this kind of language learning environment, but it can also provide you with the tutelage of an experienced Chinese teacher who is able to help to immerse you in the language.
With over one billion native speakers, Chinese is the most popular language in the world. This being said, the Chinese language is widely considered as one of the toughest languages to pick up, especially for native English speakers. Chinese has very little in common with English. Though it can be tough to learn, knowing Chinese provides an advantage to those interested in careers in international business and trade. Knowledge of this language will also be beneficial for international travel and exposing oneself to Eastern philosophies. Whether you are a student at Georgia State University who is struggling in Chinese and is worried about completing their general education requirements, a professional looking to expand their business skills, or just someone looking for more access to Chinese literature, history, and culture, Varsity Tutors can enroll you in an Atlanta Chinese class that's right for you.
What material will an Atlanta Chinese course cover?
When learning to speak, read, and write in Chinese it is important to note that the language has several distinct dialects, the most popular of which being Mandarin. Mandarin is the official language of the People's Republic of China and Taiwan, though historically, most Chinese speakers in the US speak Cantonese. Other dialects include Xiang, Wu, Gan, and Hakka.
An Atlanta Chinese Class covers not just the spoken language, but the written language as well. Written Chinese is thousands of years old, with evidence of characters dating all the way back to the Shang Dynasty. While the various Chinese dialects share the same writing system, there is no Chinese alphabet. There are over 50,000 characters in the Chinese language, around 20,000 of which are used regularly. Each symbol represents one syllable, and the vast majority of written Chinese is communicated using around 2,500 characters. Chinese is also the only modern pictographic language, which means that a majority of the Chinese characters we still use today come from ancient drawings of the items they are meant to describe. These symbols give no clues to pronunciation but must be learned individually. You will also learn about Pinyin, a system for translating Chinese characters to letters in the English alphabet based on their pronunciation.
Concepts covered in the Chinese classes we can set you up with include tonal languages. Chinese is a tonal language, which means that the meaning of a word changes according to its tone. You will learn about the four separate tones in Mandarin Chinese including flat, rising, falling then rising, and falling. The classes also touch on other dialects which feature up to nine different tones. You will also gain an understanding of how Chinese functions without articles, verb inflections, or plurals. All words in this language have just one grammatical form. Unlike English, in which plural nouns are marked with an -s, Chinese nouns retain the same form regardless of whether or not they are singular or plural. You will also study pronouns, which have different characters based on gender, making for a similar sound but different pronunciation. Other topics of study in Chinese classes include Pinyin, common phrases, essential vocabulary, Chinese history, and more.
How will an Atlanta Chinese class help me learn?
Every Chinese class that we can get you enrolled in is a group class, in which you will join an expert instructor as well as other students in a collaborative, online space. In an online setting, you will be involved in collaborative lessons, which have been proven to deepen understanding and more fully prepare students. Classes are also offered in multiple sections, and new sections begin monthly, so we can get you set up with the perfect class to fit your specific skill level and schedule. When you sign up for a Chinese class, you can choose between a two-week or four-week class, depending on how much additional language learning help you desire.
Need some extra help? No worries. You can even request one-on-one time with an educated and experienced instructor so that you can work on specific areas. We have a rigorous interviewing and vetting process to ensure that instructors are both highly qualified and good communicators, so you know you'll be getting top-notch assistance. Not only that, but Chinese classes will bring the classroom to you through a totally virtual platform. You will be able to see, hear, and interact with the instructor as if they were sitting at a table with you. Take advantage of a great value. The classes we can set you up with not only allow you to learn and work in groups, but they also help you to save money.
