Vocabulary Tutoring FAQ
Expanding a child's vocabulary is one of the most important functions of elementary English education. Learning new words gives students more ways to express themselves while also helping them to prepare for the Common Core standardized exams that begin in third grade. If your child seems to be struggling with their word acquisition, Varsity Tutors can refer you to an experienced vocabulary tutor who can help them pursue their academic goals.
Here are some benefits of elementary school vocabulary tutoring:
Working in a one-on-one learning environment
Study sessions designed around a student's learning style
Standardized test prep
The ability to learn at a child's own pace
The value of a dedicated one-on-one learning environment cannot be overstated. A vocabulary tutor does not have the same time constraints a classroom teacher might, enabling them to build a connection with their pupil. If your child is interested in dinosaurs, all of the example sentences during vocabulary tutoring sessions can pertain to dinosaurs to make sessions more engaging. Sessions can be tailored to a student's individual learning style. Visual learners pick up new vocabulary words best when they can see them, making flashcards an effective technique. Alternatively, hearing words used in a sentence may help it sink into an auditory learner's mind. Either way, students can ask any questions they have and receive a timely response from their tutor. This enables them to seek extra help before they fall behind their peers.
If your young student struggles with test anxiety, their vocabulary knowledge may have little to do with their exam scores. In this scenario, vocabulary tutoring sessions may center on practice exams to give your child a sense of what to expect, removing fear of the unknown from the equation. This may prove especially valuable for the Common Core exams at the end of the school year, which can feel very intimidating. A tutor may also share test-taking tips that a student can fall back on if they don't know an answer.

Recent Vocabulary Tutoring Session Notes
During this session, we worked on the student's English assignment which was to create a 15 line poem. She decided to create a Haiku poem based upon her love for dogs. Brainstorming and creating the poem was an easy task for student as it is a topic she thoroughly enjoys. She required minimal assistance with this assignment.
We finished the student's outline for her final essay that will be an in class essay. She needed to create a strong thesis and find her proof via 4 different pieces of literature they read during the course of the semester. The last few minutes of class were used to review for her Spanish conversation final. We will resume classes at the beginning of the year.
The student and I spent the majority of our session preparing for his upcoming English final. We went through an entire practice sheet that was essentially a practice version of his exam. We developed a good strategy for going through a poem from when he receives it to when he makes his final observations. He has definitely progressed when it comes to analyzing poetry and doing the work necessary to understand it.
We spent 30 minutes reviewing for her Biology final. Discussed the origins of genetic disorders and diseases and how they differ from viral and bacterial diseases. Remaining hour was spent preparing for her English final. Time spent discussing vocabulary literary devices, and To Kill a Mockingbird. Developed examples of concepts such as themes, motifs, climax, plot, etc. from movies and music. Then she applies these concepts to the novel To Kill a Mockingbird.
We spent most of our time today on the student's spelling words. I could really see marked improvement today. He also finished his math homework, and wrote a story using his spelling words.
Finished material for reading (plot chart and Venn diagram); practiced saying and spelling sight words; practiced addition speed facts; practiced vowel sounds.
The student can continue working on summer packet and reading independently at home.
