We worked mainly on Trig functions and the use of a unit circle to compute Cos, Sin, Tan, CSC, etc. of angles. The student truly has her head on her shoulders. She's very bright and very attentive. I have no doubt that this student will obtain outstanding results in Math.

Tonight was our last session. We continued pushing through and got as far as we could. We had a good amount of practice with polynomials but she could still use more repetition with additional problems. I would suggest her working back through all of our sections using our notes to help her.

I helped the student study for the test he has tomorrow. We also discussed some of the material that he will be covering in the next chapter, and I recommended that he make flashcards to help him remember the names of the various theorems and postulates that he will need to use in proofs. He also asked my opinion about whether he should skip algebra 2, so we spent a little time discussing his plans for future math classes.

Tutoring review by Lisa in Steilacoom, WA
For this session, the student wanted to focus on Critical Reading. I brought practice exams for the reading section only. My goal for this session was to show him how to actually read the text when taking the test. To accomplish this, I read the text aloud and periodically stopped to model my thinking, share key lines I would underline, and annotations I would make in the margins, while he made the annotations along with me. When I finished reading the passage I asked him to complete the multiple choice questions on his own. I did this for two single passages and one two passage practice test so he could see the method to approach and read the text. He got most of the questions right after reading the passage this way and expressed that it was easier to answer the questions and he had to look back in the passage less to find the answers. After doing a few passages with me modeling my thinking, I asked him to read a passage aloud and note what he would underline, where he would annotate, etc. Again he expressed that this helped when answering the questions based on the text. Finally I had him read the passage silently, annotate and answer the questions on his own. We discussed how the SAT will put answers on the multiple choice that could be correct inferences, but they are only looking for direct interpretation from what is explicitly stated in the text. I think that he is well prepared to take the SAT tomorrow.
