Tutoring review by Tara in Shelton, WA
Worked on homework assignments from last week and current. The student was working with multiplying and dividing fractions with exponents and variables, converting square and cubic feet and yards, and adding and subtracting unlike variable fractions. We got through two and a half assignments and she seemed confident that she could complete the last half on her own.

The student and I covered kinematic equations (the four equations that I posted to the whiteboard); velocity, displacement, and acceleration graphs; motion maps; gravity; and the motion of free-falling objects. I also gave him a plan of action to help him be as successful as possible. I can tell that he is very intelligent and should have no problem attaining a high grade in the course. My recommendation is for him to read the textbook before he goes into class. It will give him time to allow his subconscious to digest the material. The next action I have is for him to talk to his teacher. I know that many students would rather not meet with their professors because they think it makes them look bad. Speaking with teachers is not a bad thing. It is something that serious students do. It is also something that everyone has to do when they go to college. I encourage the student to email his professor about a specific problem. Ask the professor to go over the example after class from start to finish. Some teachers aren't willing to do this but it will show them that he is taking the class seriously. These study strategies can be used to learn anything. It is good to start practicing them now because they will prove to be useful in college.

Tutoring review by Gabriella in Shelton, WA
Today we reviewed the student's power of ten homework, and I built upon it to teach her about exponent addition (a concept that is above her grade level). She understood and had no mistakes on her homework. After going over lesson 4, we moved on to lesson 5 which is on the number system. She managed to get through 1.5/2 pages of the lesson. I am really pleased with the progress she has made, and we are ahead of her class.

We covered a preview for Trigonometry Chapter 1 from the school textbook in order to prep for a quiz. We reviewed materials from the textbook and from old quizzes. The student seemed to be happy because he understood the materials and they became clear in his mind. I required him to go through problems assigned in the textbook for homework.

We covered measures of central tendency (mean, median), standard deviation, standard error, confidence intervals, types of variables (nominal, ordinal, continuous) and different types of distributions. We discussed issues related to a homework assignment and how to communicate statistical concepts to a non-statistics audience. The student will send me a draft of the assignment later this week.
