Springfield, Nebraska, is a city located within Sarpy County, and it has a population of roughly 2,000 people. The city was first platted by U.S. Civil War veteran J. D. Spearman in 1873, who did so in anticipation of the Missouri Pacific Railroad being built. The community was named after several springs located nearby. The town was incorporated in the October of 1881, and by its first birthday, it had a population of 300.

Today, we reviewed how to distinguish between permutations and combinations because the student had a very difficult time with the homework last week in this topic. We went over all the homework problems and made it very clear the difference between the two and how to solve each type of problem. We also reviewed a little about estimations, sales tax, and discounts before time ran out.

Yesterday was a mixed bag. We did math for the first 30+ minutes. We worked on problems that I had hand-written on lined paper, rather than the blue inked school worksheet, he was much more productive.

This was the first session with the student. We focused on reviewing the first homework assignment for her multivariate stats class. The assignment concerned data cleaning and evaluation. She and I focused on the aspects of the assignment which required using SPSS. After we worked together tonight, the student seemed much more comfortable working with the program.

Tutoring review by Stephen in Springfield, NE
Today the student and I began by doing a practice set of problems employing the strategies for multiple choice/multiple answer questions. She did well identifying which strategies to use for which problems. On some of the questions she was able to use conventional Math methods. I had her work through them with plugging in and estimation strategies just to be sure she knows what to do in cases in which she doesn't know which Math steps to take to get to a solution. She doesn't have a problem with estimation or using the answer choices, but she ran into some difficulty using appropriate numbers when making up values for variables in problems. On a few problems she did it with my help and then I had her set up the problem again with her own numbers to get more practice with this. There aren't any set rules, she just needs to work with the numbers so that they make it easy to figure out the value of the correct answer to compare the answer choices against. For the second hour, we went over strategy on Quantitative Comparison questions. We started again with plugging in numbers. I gave her the FROZEN acronym to help her decide what kind of numbers to use. I told her that which ones she will use depends on the constraints of the problems, but that she should use a simple number to give a basis for comparison, and then use at least one other number from a category likely to create a contradiction with the original comparison. We then went over some example problems together. We ended with some problems that involved picking more specific numbers that would fit in well with the questions. For homework, I gave her some practice Quantitative Comparison questions and a few multiple choice questions that lend themselves well to the tactics we have gone over.

Tutoring review by Jenna in Springfield, NE
Our first session went very well! Most of our time this session was spent reviewing strategies for solving systems of equations and converting "break even" word problems into systems of equations. The student did very well and was able to pick up the taught concepts very quickly. (It's always great to see that "ah ha" moment!) We were able to go over tonight's homework, review previous problems that she didn't quite understand, and briefly preview the material she will be doing in class tomorrow and for homework tomorrow night. All in all, it was a great session.
