Recent Gretna Tutoring Session Notes

Tutoring review by Luke in Gretna, NE
Today we reviewed the unit circle and the shifting of equations (horizontally and vertically), as well as rules for logarithms and checking domains. We also reviewed in some detail the way that sine and cosine graphs are drawn and transformed based on the unit circle. Finally we discussed some factoring problems and I reminded Aidan of the algebraic method of solving complicated factoring problems. All in all, she caught on pretty quickly to most of what I taught her, as this was largely review for her. She is still struggling a bit to really internalize the way that subtracting values from the input of a function will shift the output of a function in the opposite direction but I think she is able to see it a little more clearly now than before we talked, because this was a significant focus of our session. She also wasn't quite sure about converting radians to degrees in situations where the radians lack a pi component. I explained to her that these situations were still handled normally (divide by pi radians, multiply by 180 degrees). On the way out the door I talked to her about FLOSS as a way to learn more about computing and reasoning in the long-term, which she seemed to find somewhat interesting. I offered to install a FLOSS operating system for dual-booting alongside Windows if she is interested in exploring higher technology in her free time. This practice greatly improves the abstract reasoning skills of everyone willing to try it, so I felt it was worth suggesting.

Tutoring review by John in Gretna, NE
During this session, I helped the student review the topics covered on upcoming test which were the basic skills involved in proof making. There were three main sections to the concepts. The first covered important properties of equalities that would be used as justification for proof statements. We would apply these properties first in the second section which dealt with algebraic proofs. These proofs were basically solving given equations for x and articulating why each step on the way to finding x is considered valid. To wrap up the review, we would apply the equality properties along with basic postulates such as segment/ angle addition to prove basic geometry proofs (like proving the congruence of given angles or segments). Regarding these topics, he has a good grasp on the concepts.
