Tutoring review by Marc in South Boston, VA
Today, the student and I reviewed for her biology exam. We reviewed all topics on her review sheet, with a strong focus on macromolecules and body systems. She has a strong understanding of concepts, and I encouraged her to commit terms like glycogen (animal storage carbohydrate) and nucleotide (DNA building block) to memory. Overall, she did really well.

In today's session, we did more work with rational functions. The student's assignment was to state domain, asymptotes, holes, etc. for various functions. He worked through the worksheet, and then he did additional problems from the book. Afterwards, he said he felt much better about the material.

Today's session began with warm-up word problems for the student. I assisted with the first two problems and he had to do two more independently. He showed success with stating the correct expression. We then worked on his extra credit assignment from his math teacher which involved supplementary angles. He grasped the concept very quickly. Lastly, we discussed his accommodations and goals from his IEP. I would like him to ask for his accommodations more frequently in his classes. He also shared his current grades. The next session will be scheduled for 4/1.

Tutoring review by Skylar in South Boston, VA
We went over test and questions she got wrong. There were quite a few that the student did the calculus part right but then did the algebra part wrong. I emphasized the need to practice the trig and algebra on her own. We went over graphing functions and what to do if she gets stuck. We also worked through the homework for related rates. Again she had no trouble with the calculus but is struggling with basic concepts from previous classes. This is something serious that we will be working on until she has it down, in order to go forward.

Tutoring review by Rebecca in South Boston, VA
The student has just learned the distributive property in school. We extended that learning to explain that the number outside of the parentheses could represent a factor of the two numbers inside. We practiced several distribution problems with whole numbers for his homework, and then we practiced example problems I wrote for him that involved numbers with decimals. While he understands well how to distribute, he needs to be careful to look at the terms inside the parentheses and combine them if they are like-terms before he distributes, this will save him a step in many problems and help him speed up his problem-solving time.
