The student and I wrapped up the Exam 12 review from last time mostly without problems, though some of the questions took a while when referencing material from all the way back to the beginning of the class. That review has a LOT of really important fundamental arithmetic stuff, so we worked through it at a medium pace, and I made sure to try and cover each subject comprehensively, so that he would know how to handle logarithms, exponents, horizontal asymptotes, domain questions, inverse functions, and the various function "types" (including what they're used for and what the general formulas. We basically covered a lot of definitions, rules, and theorems that are pretty simple, but it's easy to forget some of them. I left some other problems in that packet for him to do, and next time we'll probably breeze through the trig stuff, which he's good at, and look at Exam 5

Tutoring review by Maggie in Selkirk, NY
Since the student has had a difficult time working with negative integers while solving equations, I decided to spend some time during this session reviewing different strategies when working with negative integers. I had him practice adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing integers. Then we moved on to applying those strategies in solving equations. Though he still makes mistakes, this review has made a difference in his solving skills. He solving the problems with more ease and fewer mistakes.

Tutoring review by Ben in Selkirk, NY
The student completed a full SAT practice test, from which we examined the answers at our session. She showed improvement on the writing portion, on the multiple choice and especially on the essay. While her essay could still use some narrative interest through added detail, her organization, style, and expression of ideas showed improvement. She saw exactly where she could have saved time and better focused her body paragraphs - mainly during the outlining process. She still has a lot of progress to make in math. While she does not lack confidence in offering an answer, she relies too much on guesswork and gives up too easily on her calculations (which are often on the right track). We worked through problem-solving strategies for the lion's share of the lesson; I'll be completing a full score breakdown of her test for next week.

Tutoring review by Diptesh in Selkirk, NY
Sunday's session was focused on the M section. The session was begun by administering an M knowledge and skills exam, which was then reviewed together. The student demonstrated content knowledge gaps in some areas, such as exponents and fractions. Although the SAT M section does not explicitly or directly test such knowledge, it indirectly requires a robust understanding and application ability of such basic skills. The review consisted of identifying his knowledge gaps, assessing the skills necessary for a more intricate understanding, reviewing the content and the concomitant skills required, and practicing these methods. This process spanned the entire course of the tutoring session. It is imperative that he has an adept, strategic, and ingrained understanding of and relationship with such content in order to successfully and efficiently tackle the questions which will appear on the SAT M section. As a follow-up with the diagnostic and review conducted today, the student was assigned further diagnostic tests in each of the content areas pertinent to the M section (geometry, algebra, etc.). Following each diagnostic exam is an Instructional Materials review which offers further practice for each of the skills and concepts in the content area diagnostics. Further RC and vocabulary homework was also assigned.
