Tutoring review by Grace in Round Lake, NY
We started by reviewing homework from the science section, and then moved into a discussion about strategies for the math section. We did sections of a timed math practice test, and used it to identify areas of weakness, such as trigonometry or inequalities. Next session, we will continue to work through the answers from this practice test, and hopefully come back to work on science.

Tutoring review by Tyler in Round Lake, NY
The student and I reviewed her homework, focusing primarily on z-scores. Beyond practicing the calculation, we emphasized the significance of z-score and why z-scores are used in statistics through word problems. By the end of the lesson, she was able to identify percentages of z-scores and what percent of data falls between two z-scores.

Tutoring review by Bonnie in Round Lake, NY
We worked on multiplying and dividing like bases raised to exponents, doing the nth root of variables and exponents, and rationalizing denominators today. At first the student struggled with breaking a base up that's raised to a higher exponent into repeated multiplication of that base to smaller exponents. After a few examples, he certainly was able to apply this strategy to numerous problems. For example: x^6=x^2 times x^2 times x^2. The purpose of this is if you are going the square root of x ^2 then it just becomes x and you can keep simplifying that. With practice he understood this content. He had a positive attitude towards our lesson and he was able to apply the strategies we went over today. We were able to preview the next chapter that he will learn in class as well. I feel as though it was a successful session.

The student and I had another great session! We started with a timed addition worksheet, where she was able to answer 22 questions in 3 minutes. Next, we did some work with a clock and telling time. Then, we did some more work with subtracting with regrouping. Last, we played a place value card game. She did an amazing job, and I'm looking forward to our session next week!

Tutoring review by Joseph in Round Lake, NY
The student and I worked on reading comprehension and vocabulary to prepare for an upcoming test in his language arts class. We read through a story together and I used summarizing strategies to monitor his comprehension and check for understanding. We specifically covered character, setting and plot in a short story. He is a good reader and had a firm grasp of the text. I talked to his mother afterward and learned that he retains more information when he reads about topics he is interested in. My goal, in part, will thus be to help him maintain interest in his work. Tomorrow I will learn more about the curriculum used in his class so I can better prepare for our future meetings. Overall, I am confident in his reading ability and excited to move forward. I really enjoyed meeting him and his family; they were all very welcoming and kind.

Tutoring review by Amit in Round Lake, NY
Today we worked with algebraic expressions: simplifying them, factoring them, finding common denominators and adding them. We also did some word problems in algebra. We practiced all of this using practice problems from the question bank for SAT math.
