The only public secondary institution in the town is Greenville High School, which is managed by the Greenville Central School District. Tutoring review by Benjamin in Greenville, NY
We went over multi-step inequalities after we went over some in depth rules about negative numbers (e.g., adding, multiplying, and how they fall on the number line). She is doing very well with the "box method," but we're still working on solving multi-step equations in a more direct path.

Tutoring review by Deana in Greenville, NY
The student did his math homework sheet, which was only 15 problems. This sheet practiced writing improper fractions as a mixed number. After he finished this I made some review problems for long division, writing equivalent fractions, writing mixed numbers as mixed fractions, and adding fractions with different denominators. This last material was partially new, but he has been doing well enough with the material that I decided to introduce this new kind of problem so he will be ready next week when he sees it in class.

Tutoring review by Mary in Greenville, NY
The student is currently working on inequality proofs. This can be confusing for students because previously the work she has been doing is proving that that the triangles, etc. are congruent. With inequality proofs, however, we are proving the opposite: that one line/angle is bigger than the other. We spent the lesson clarifying the theorems and applying them in the proofs.

The students are using Saxon Math 6/7. They are currently on chapter 33 - changing percents to fractions. We reviewed prime numbers and factor trees specifically as a method to reduce fractions. In upcoming lessons we will review GCF, LCM, divisibility rules, and long division.

Tutoring review by Junior in Greenville, NY
Our main concept today was factoring trinomials. The simpler ones are like x^2 + 10x +24 where we look for a product of +24 and a sum of +10. For a list of possibilities, the correct pair is 6 and 4--producing the factors: (x + 6)(x + 4). This can be verified using the FOIL method. The strategy is to try every possible combination until the correct one is found. The student saw the light and was successful doing several on his own. We then proceeded to more complex forms of factoring where the leading coefficient of x^2 is not = to 1. As one example, we considered 18x^2 - 9x -14. There are numerous combinations, but only one will work. The only strategy here is guess-and-check. We found the correct pair of factors to be (6x - 7)(3x + 2). He will practice more of these before our next session.
