Tutoring review by Tracy in Rowlett, TX
We worked on graphing quadratics - specifically, making a table of values, and finding the axis of symmetry, the vertex, the direction the parabola opens, and the x and y intercepts. The student did well with all of this, but needs to make sure he works carefully enough to avoid calculation errors. He did better when he wrote a little more of his work out rather than trying to do it all mentally.

The student's test on chapter 8 is Tuesday, so we started with the end of chapter review. His teacher gave them some problems to do involving quadratics; graphing, finding vertices and axes of symmetry, and solving/finding zeros by various means. He is quite good now, and as long as he focuses, doesn't go too fast, and doesn't try to do too much in his head, he should be able to avoid systematic errors. I have high hopes for this test.

Tutoring review by Maroun in Rowlett, TX
Today we went over the remainder of last week's homework. The student finished the worksheet on his own which focused on graphing conics. He did very well overall. There were very few arithmetic mistakes, and he seems to understand the concept very well. I assured him that the more graphs he does, the more likely he will begin to recognize the shape of a curve from the equation alone. We also went over the review worksheets for his upcoming exam tomorrow. There were many problems assigned, so we began with the more challenging open-ended ones, then moved on to the less challenging multiple choice. I felt that he is quite ready for his exam.

Today we worked on long-division with decimals, geology (specifically the identification of minerals by their various properties), and maps. The student was challenged a little with the division at first, but he quickly improved once I worked through a few problems with him.

Tutoring review by Natalya in Rowlett, TX
Today we went over missed problems from the test. The test included the following topics: linear functions (writing functions given a word problem, or a graph; finding the slope and the y-intercept from the given graph or algebraically; determining characteristics of a given function, such as domain, range, x-and y-intercepts, and end behavior), setting up and solving inequalities, and solving word problems. There will be a re-test given on Friday of the next week after the Fall break. We worked through the problems that he missed, and I also gave him the same problems with different values to work on. I will send some extra work to his father. My suggestion for him is to watch for small mistakes. Based on the graded test, there is no partial credit given if the answer is wrong (even if most of the solution is correct).

Tutoring review by Jason in Rowlett, TX
The student struggled at first with limits, especially graphically. It was especially difficult for him to understand approaching from the left, the right, and overall compared to the value at that point. At the end, I think he understood it pretty well. He did well with the factoring and canceling limits once I showed him how to do it once. He also said he did well on his quiz last week so I think he will do well on this one as well.
