Tutoring review by Angi in Portola Valley, CA
The student had a workbook that we worked through. I looked through the notebook and practiced some of the concepts that I saw in the book. We practiced PEMDAS, comparing fractions, dividing, rounding, place value, and changing fractions to decimals. It was a great session.

We reviewed completing the square method, doing different problems until the student got the hang of it, and I checked a few problems he had worked out on polynomial multiplication and division. We briefly reviewed synthetic division and finding roots, then moved on to rational functions.

We reviewed the practice the student did for homework, and continued through the remainder of a practice Algebra 2/ Trigonometry exam. Went to the student's workbook to review transformations and applied problems involving vectors and parallelograms. I advised her on time management strategies for the real test - tackling the problems she knows how to do, skipping the rest and coming back to them later. I believe she'll not only pass, but make a score over 80%.

Tutoring review by Matthew in Portola Valley, CA
We spent the session reviewing for an upcoming exam focusing on trigonometry. We began the session reviewing how to evaluate trig functions given either the value of a single trig function, an angle, or a point on a ray. While the student initially struggled with these problems, it seemed primarily due to the amount of time that had lapsed since she had worked on them, as with a bit of direction she quickly became comfortable with them again. Most of the session was spent working on graphing trig functions or deriving a function from a graph. We made major progress with these problems, and she seemed comfortable with the problems by session's end. I recommended she continue working on the handout given by her instructor and also work out some graphing problems in her textbook to keep in practice.

Tutoring review by Jerilynn in Portola Valley, CA
We started going through the review packet for the midterm exam. We reviewed evaluating limits by simplifying and by recognizing the limit definition of a derivative at a point. We practiced sketching a graph using information about the first and second derivative. We practiced finding related rates for a word problem as well as finding the approximate value of an integral from a table of values. We went over the mean value theorem and Rolle's theorem for a continuous function on a closed interval. We also looked at setting up an integral to find the area between a curve and the x-axis and talked about what having infinity as one of the limits of integration means. Lastly, we reviewed properties of taking integrals of even and odd functions. The student is doing well solving limits by simplifying and we made sure to go over how to recognize the limit definition for a derivative. He is also doing well sketching and working with graphs of functions.

The student has a daily reading log. We're working on making sure he reads the questions carefully before writing. This is important so he's learning the correct reading response skills such as - making connections and writing with enough details / answering the whole question.
