Tutoring review by Sofia in Oconomowoc, WI
The student and I went over the distributive property, using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. She showed that she understands this concept well. Then we moved on to solving equations for a single variable. Again, she did well when presented with the problem. However, she struggled a bit when it came to setting up the equation from a word problem--sometimes she would solve the problem with mental math but not be quite sure how to put how she solved it into words. We worked on it a bit, and she did well on our review of how to set up rate problems based on word problems. Then we moved on to solving equations for a single variable (multi-step problems). She has come a long way since beginning sessions--now, she's willing to attempt problems even if she's not 100 percent confident in her ability to solve it--she doesn't start out by saying "I don't know" and is now willing to take a chance. I talked with her about how great it is that she can identify what, precisely, she struggles with in math, rather than thinking that she can't do any of it. Overall, it was another great session.

We reviewed what we covered at last session. The student had a short list of phrases and expressions on his iPad that his teacher might quiz them on. We went over the list. We also previewed what will be covered next week. He learned new words to describe school supplies, how to ask about time and how to ask if he may borrow something from someone. Maybe I can see his teacher's comments or his tests to help him more strategically.

My goal for the student today was to practice some of the concepts she had difficulty with as related to her score report. We began with her vocabulary assignment from last week. We then moved on to several vocabulary practices. She must use the strategies for process of elimination. For this week, she has two practice test and one verbal. I also sent her several reading practice test focusing on practice main idea, poetry, and author's inferences. She is to add the next 10 words and 5 roots from her list.
