Tutoring review by Tere in Harrisburg, NC
On Tuesday the student and I worked together on his math homework. The assignment focused on division. He was dividing two and three digit numbers by one digit numbers. At first he was not aligning his numbers properly which resulted in incorrect answers and confusion. Initially he was not sure exactly what the long division steps were. I went over one example with him slowly and pointed out each step and why it worked that way. With a little help he began to increase his fluidity in long division steps. Sometimes he would have to ask me what to do next but I could normally ask him, "what do you think?" and he would usually choose the correct step. I was very proud to see him execute this skill with ease. I am hoping his confidence is boosting as he sees how capable he is in math.

Today we reviewed for a quiz the student is having on simplifying rational expressions. He understands the method for solving the equations when we are working on them together, but I think he might not always remember what we did later. With more practice this issue should dissipate.

In this session, we discussed that a radical is an operation like addition or subtraction, and that it is related to exponents much like addition is related to subtraction. The student practiced solving radicals by factoring the radicand to find a perfect square. We also discussed different ways that a radical can be written to represent the same value.

We split the session half geometry and half biology. For geometry it was more circle and triangle geometry. The student is struggling a little bit with triangles inside circles because there are so many chords, tangents, and secants. She is getting a little bit confused with all the different lines. I am going to send her a bunch of practice problems that she can do over the weekend, And I will also send her the solutions so that she can see how the problem should be done. Then we moved on to biology, and we covered the respiratory and circulatory systems. We went over her notes from class. She also labelled the parts of the heart, and we went over the flow of blood through the systemic and pulmonary circulation.

Tutoring review by Kristi in Harrisburg, NC
We continued reviewing for the student's test. We focused the first half of the session on the definition of the derivative and solving problems using the definition of the derivative. She seems worried about this topic, but conceptually she understands it really well. It is a computationally heavy type of problem, so when she makes a mistake on it, it is usually something like forgetting a coefficient or dropping a negative sign. Thus, I think she should have more confidence with the topic, because her understanding of the topic is excellent and she can do the math, she just gets caught up in the trivial computations sometimes. We did many practice problems on the topic and I think she is getting more comfortable with them. We also reviewed limits, specifically those that evaluate to 0/0. I showed her a technique for dealing with those kinds of problems, and she caught on very quickly. We talked briefly about logarithms. She seemed far more comfortable with them during this session than during the last session. We covered thinking about the translations of logarithmic graphics, dealing with limits that involve logarithms and the three major rules of logarithms. Lastly we covered range of a function. I introduced the student to some tricks for dealing with this type of problem, such as identifying if a function has an even or odd exponent, and if it has an even one, how to go about finding the vertex of the function. We also covered the idea of an inverse function and that one way to think about the range of a function is to think about the domain of the inverse of the function instead.

Tutoring review by Christopher in Harrisburg, NC
I went over a math book that covers 1st grade math. The student is doing outstanding work for someone who is in kindergarten. The workbook covers word problems, which also helps him with reading and writing. He has to read a problem and write the equation. There were pictures in the beginning that helped with basic addition and subtraction. After a few pages, the assignments got harder. He will be well prepared for next year because I am pretty sure that he could go over 2nd grade material. He is very enthusiastic and welcomes any challenges.
