We completed an exam review that covered solving equations using the quadratic formula and completing the square. Completing the square problems proved to require the most effort from him.

Tutoring review by Matthew in Florham Park, NJ
We reviewed the rectangular and polar forms of complex numbers and parametric equations. The student needs to retake a test next week and this material has been giving her the hardest time. She knows the material, but she speeds through the problems and sometimes does not check to see if her calculator's mode is in radians or degrees. As a result, she makes a number of small mistakes. I emphasized the importance of checking her work and the mode of her calculator. Afterward, we moved to her new math chapter. We reviewed linear, quadratic and exponential functions and how to derive them from points on a graph. I also helped her get started on her homework. She feels more comfortable with this material.

Tutoring review by Victoria in Florham Park, NJ
During this session, we first worked though a mid-chapter review on functions. Then we moved ahead and worked on how to find slope and how to use slope-intercept form for lines. She understood slope very well. We did a lot of practice with finding the slope between two points on a line, but we also talked about general properties of slopes. She understood this well and had no problems with it. We looked over slope-intercept form very briefly because she was going to talk about it in class on Monday. She did well with the information that we did cover.

Tutoring review by Nicholas in Florham Park, NJ
The student and I worked with drawing derivatives. He knew how to recognize where the graph of the derivative crossed the x axis, but he was not sure which way it went (if the graph was positive or negative), so we talked about the values of the slopes and similar concepts. We also worked with finding derivatives using calculators, difference quotients, and finding the derivative at a point with the alternate form of the derivative formula.

Tutoring review by Matthew in Florham Park, NJ
The student struggled with word problems. He had trouble visualizing what the questions were asking and therefore could not begin to solve them. We went through a HW assignment with different word problems, and he got a better grasp of how to solve them. At the end of the session, he said that he felt better about the material. Overall he felt good about the session and said he would contact me again closer to his upcoming midterm.

The student and I went over energy. He showed good understanding of conservation of energy. We ran into a bit of difficulty with work, which inherently can be a tough concept. Like every topic we've run into so far, I'm sure by next session he'll understand it well.
