Prospective medical students know that they'll have to take the MCAT, and those who might want support in the months and weeks leading up to their test can reach out to Varsity Tutors. We can connect you with resources that can help as you begin your Tucson MCAT preparation. The Medical College Admission Test covers a wide variety of topics and concepts that medical professionals, medical students, and professors believe are important to being a successful medical student and doctor.
The Medical College Admission Test is required for admission to almost all of the medical schools in the United States, and many in Canada. This includes the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson. It is important to schedule your exam within three years of your decision to attend medical school because many schools do not accept MCAT scores that are more than three years old. This test is multiple choice, standardized, and delivered via computer. The test consists of 230 questions in four different sections. You'll receive five different scores: one for each section and one combined total score. Section scores range from 118-132, and the total score range is from 472 to 528.
What can I expect from Tucson MCAT prep?
The sections of the MCAT are as follows: Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems; Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills; Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems; and Psychological, Social and Biological Foundations of Behavior. The seated time for the test is approximately 7.5 hours, while the test itself will take 6 hours and 15 minutes. Let's start with the Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills section.
There are 53 questions in the Critical Analysis and Reasoning skills section. You'll be given 90 minutes to read and answer nine passage-based sets of questions. Each passage typically has 5-7 questions to answer. This section examines your knowledge of basic components of a text, how to integrate components to better understand a passage, and how well you can pull meaning from compositional elements. Questions in this section focus on your verbal reasoning skills, analytical skills, and reading comprehension.
In the Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems section, there are 59 questions. You'll be given 95 minutes to answer these questions, which are broken into two categories: 10 passage-based sets of questions with up to six questions per set, and 15 independent questions. This section is meant to examine what you know and understand about the tissues of the human body, organs and organ systems, and the chemical and physical principles of living systems. The questions focus on your knowledge of general, inorganic, and organic chemistry; introductory physics, introductory biology, and basic biochemistry.
The Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems section consists of 59 questions. You'll have 95 minutes to complete them. There are 10 passage-based sets of questions with 4-6 questions per passage, and 15 independent questions. This section explores your knowledge of how cells and organ systems act independently and work together, how organisms and cells maintain a constant internal environment, how they acquire materials and energy, and how they respond to the environment, among other topics. Questions focus on general and organic chemistry, introductory biology, and basic biochemistry concepts.
Finally, the Psychological, Social and Biological Foundations of Behavior section has 59 questions, also with 10 passage-based sets of questions that have up to 6 questions to answer, and 15 independent questions. This section focuses on human behavior.
How can Tucson MCAT preparation help me?
There are a couple of different ways that you can get started with Tucson MCAT prep. Two popular methods are one-on-one instruction with a Tucson MCAT tutor, or enrolling in a Tucson MCAT prep class with other students who are also getting ready for their MCAT. Both methods have benefits, and sometimes students find it to be helpful to use a combination of both models. At Varsity Tutors, we can help you find what you need, whether that's private instruction or an MCAT prep class with others.
When you're working with a Tucson MCAT tutor, you can expect focused, one-on-one attention that starts in the very first session, when that instructor begins to get to know you. They'll spend some time learning about your goals, your learning style, and your academic strengths and areas of opportunity. They'll use that information as they design a study plan that works through the content you can expect to see on your exam. They can also rearrange the schedule to spend more time on topics that you struggle with, whether that's in Critical Analysis and Reasoning or Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems. Your instructor can also administer practice exams throughout your sessions to gauge your progress, and to give you an idea of what you'll see on test day.
When you're in a Tucson MCAT prep class, you'll get the benefits of group interaction and review without having to be in the exact location as everyone else. Enjoy the collaborative environment where you have the opportunity to bounce ideas off of others and share tips. You can connect through the Internet with our Live Learning Platform, anywhere you are. Studying with others can help you strengthen your understanding of the topics you struggle with. For example, you may struggle with Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems, and speaking with others who are studying the same material may give you a perspective that you didn't see before. This model allows for more flexibility than people might expect. You can take your classes wherever you're comfortable and you can choose from two-week classes or four-week classes. There are new sessions beginning each week, so there's no worrying about joining a class that's already in progress.
How can I connect with someone for Tucson MCAT prep?
Reaching out to the team at Varsity Tutors is an efficient way to enroll in a Tucson MCAT prep course, or to connect with an academic instructor with whom you can work privately. Our educational consultants can help you weigh the benefits of and processes involved in each educational method, and help you determine which model is right for you. Contact us today! I studied physiology at the University of Arizona and graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelors of Science in Health Sciences. I am an aspiring physician with specific interest in preventative health. My greatest goal as an instructor is to help students succeed academically so they may achieve their dreams--whatever those may be.... Getting to know students, their academic background, and their learning style is the first step. I tailor my approach to what suits the student and subject best. I personally find that a combination of applied practice problems, discussions, and images works well most of the time. Above all, I remain patient and positive.
