Doing well on this exam is a crucial step in your medical career so you will want to make sure to do everything you can to properly prepare for this difficult assessment. No matter whether you've just started preparing or have been reviewing for the MCAT for awhile and feel you need extra assistance, Varsity Tutors is here to support you in your MCAT journey. Syracuse MCAT prep opportunities can help you prepare more thoroughly than you might be able to do by yourself.
The MCAT is a six hour and 15-minute exam, not including your breaks. The assessment is taken on a computer and consists of 230 multiple-choice questions. You will receive five scores for your exam: one for each of the four distinct sections and then one combined total score. The MCAT assesses you on different concepts and material you will need in order to be successful in your medical school program. The concepts assessed on the MCAT are based on content you are expected to have learned in your introductory level physics, psychology, sociology, biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry, and biochemistry classes.
What skills and content can Syracuse MCAT prep cover to assist me in preparing for the exam?
As previously stated, the MCAT consists of four separate sections. The sections include the Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems assessment, Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills assessment, Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Behavior assessment, and Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior assessment. All of the sections contain between 53 and 59 questions and have a maximum time limit of 95 minutes. All four sections contain passage-based sets of questions, which can contain 4 to 7 questions per passage. Three of the sections also contain 15 independent questions. Total seated time to take the MCAT is 7.5 hours. There are a lot of skills you will need to review in order to do well on the MCAT so let's take a look at the different sections and the content found in each.
The 59-question Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems assessment focuses specifically on different functions of the human body as well as the basic physical and chemical concepts of living systems. Your MCAT prep course or instructor can help you review human tissues, organs, and organ systems as well as their mechanical, physical, and biochemical functions.
The next section is the 53-question Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills assessment. This portion of the MCAT is your opportunity to demonstrate your reading comprehension, verbal reasoning, and analytical skills. Your instructor can help you review how to determine the basic parts of the text and how to look at the different parts to increase your understanding of the purpose of the text.
There are 59 questions in the Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Behavior assessment. In this section, you will want to showcase your ability to explain how cells and organ systems act independently as well as how they work together to accomplish biological processes such as reproduction and growth.
For the Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior assessment, you will need to answer 59 questions about the field of behavioral health and demonstrate your ability to serve an increasingly diverse population of patients. Your MCAT review can help you review how cultural and social differences can influence psychological well-being.
The concepts listed above are not a comprehensive list of the skills you need to practice for the MCAT. An MCAT review course or instructor can help you to review all of these concepts as well as any other content you can expect to find on the exam.

Matt: Syracuse MCAT test prep instructor
I am a finance and accounting professional at a Fortune 100 firm with an MBA and currently pursuing the CMA. My teaching method would absolutely vary depending on the student. Visual learners need different kind of help than non-visual. For visual learners, I would try to paint a picture of the problem or formula so it is easier for them to understand. For non-visual, I can stick more with formulas, numbers, and memorization. ... To get the student not to simply memorize how to get or find an answer, but to help them reach a level of confidence and preparation that makes the material seem second nature to them.
