Session Summaries by Test Prep Tutors

Test Prep Tutoring review by Andrea in Charlotte, NC
Today was my first time meeting the student. She was very easy to work with and seems to have a great attitude about tutoring! I look forward to continuing to work with her. We spent most of the session going through a practice test, looking at a sampling of problems from each section. Today, we worked on the Verbal Reasoning and the Quantitative Reasoning sections. For VR, I got an idea of her current vocabulary range, which is good -- to improve it, we circled all the words she didn't know on the practice test, and her homework is to look up those words and put them on flashcards with which she can quiz herself. We also talked about guessing strategies -- process of elimination and thinking about whether the word sounds positive or negative, for instance. She responded really well to these strategies, especially with Sentence Completion problems. We discussed how most Sentence Completion problems have two parts that either agree or disagree, and that once you figure this out, you can eliminate certain answers in order to simplify your choices. For the QR section, we also looked at general testing strategies - how to identify a problem that's taking too much time, knowing that you can skip some problems and that there is no guessing penalty on this test. We looked at some keywords that pop up in math word problems and discussed process of elimination strategies, such as finding partial answers and narrowing down the answers as you work the problem rather than waiting until you finish the arithmetic involved. She did a great job!

Test Prep Tutoring review by Edward in Charlotte, NC
I compiled 2 month's worth of lessons based on free online resources. We will review biology as a whole for 3 weeks, then dig deeper into specific subjects that appear on the exam (this will be good review for the high school class). I've planned on 90-minute lessons (roughly 30 minutes per chapter). We should be able to cover 40+ chapters by May. Free resources for notes and PowerPoints have been suggested, along with full-length tests.

Test Prep Tutoring review by Austin in Charlotte, NC
During today's session, the student and I continued to work problems taken from the released practice exams. Today's study session focused on writing and critical reading. She has a strong grasp of proper English grammar, and I expect her to score highly on this section. I would like her to be more attentive to subject-verb agreement, misplaced modifiers, and faulty comparisons. In regards to critical reading, she also fares well.

The student and I worked on her answers to the reading comprehension questions, especially focusing on problem solving and ways to use context to determine the answer. We also worked on some geometry problems and discussed ways to make them easier to solve.

Test Prep Tutoring review by Terrence in Charlotte, NC
We started this session by going over the student's problem areas in the parts of the test he took recently. We will be focusing on the math and critical reading sections the most, I referred the student to get a new practice book so that we can do practice tests every week before his March SAT. I assigned him a new practice test to finish for next week in the book we were using.

We covered a selection of practice questions covering the mathematical sections. The practice included some exposure to logic questions that we hadn't covered previously. I left the student with some homework word problems in mathematics.
