Hi there! My name is Sylvan and I am a "mega dork" for ELA. I'm passionate about assisting students in reading, writing, and general communication skills. I have my Bachelor's in English with a Literature emphasis and my Master's in Teaching both from Western Washington University. I have 8 years of experience in both middle and high school classrooms. In my most recent position, I was assisted adults with disabilities in daily life. I believe my combo of skills are important for a tutor to have

It wasn't until I made it to college that I realized I wanted to be a scientist. As a high school student, I was exceptionally mediocre at school. Fortunately I was accepted to Western Washington University. It was my time at Western that I found what I was capable of. Chemistry, and mathematics are such daunting subjects, I never imagined I would be able to grasp them, after all academics were not my strong suit. Through hard work, endless study sessions, and a blossoming passion I was able to prevail and call myself a scientist. My dream is to one day become a professor of biochemistry; a pursuit near to my heart. Biochemical interpretations of the world around us fascinate me, and I would like to share my excitement for the subject with you.
I believe that learning should be engaging and relevant. One of my purposes as a tutor is to demonstrate to students the wealth of information that still awaits them and to share my excitement about these subjects in the hope that they will join me in that emotion. I hope to show them that both math and science are applicable and beneficial to their everyday lives, regardless of where their interests may eventually lead them.I also want to give my students methods for surviving and thriving in today's increasingly fast- paced and technologically advanced world. To do this, they need the critical thinking and analytical skills to discriminate and interpret the information with which they are bombarded everyday from a variety of sources. I want to show them that science is not a static body of knowledge to be memorized, but a growing and changing way of understanding our selves and our world. I try approach concepts by modeling how scientists collect data about a subject and then use it to develop theories that can explain their observations. I always emphasize that scientists continue to further develop and modify these theories as new data is discovered. I also want my students to understand that I do not have all of the answers for them and they will need to find some of them on their own. They need to be willing and capable enough to do this. When working with math, I attempt to connect concepts to "real world" uses and ideas. I hope to show my students that math is not a torture technique, but a tool that can be used to describe and test ideas as well as to overcome obstacles to success.Lastly, I believe that math and science are not done in isolation from other topics. Reading, writing and communication are important parts of instruction as well. Whether it is reading about a concept for information, learning or pleasure or it is writing and speaking about the ideas that a student has developed in working out a problem, all of these activities are integral parts of math and science work. However, my ultimate goal as a tutor is to have a positive influence on some part of each of my students' lives that helps them toward becoming capable and independent adults. The primary objective of teaching young people is to have them eventually be able to make competent and confident decisions for themselves and for others who may depend upon them as adults.
I graduated Western Washington University with an honors degree in Sociology and minor in Political Science. Currently, 3/4 of my Masters in Teaching Science is completed. I have worked in a brick and mortar classroom as an award winning certified teacher and curriculum creator for three years through Teach for America, working with students to expand on their knowledge of social justice and American history. I have also worked with adults in their first year at Arizona State University as an Academic Coach to prevent barriers to graduation. Most recently I was a remote English as a Second Language teacher to students ranging from 5-15 with an average parent rating of 5/5 and most comments saying "patient" and "encouraging to the student." I am passionate about all areas of study and have taught all of them at both the middle and elementary level. I now have extensive experience working with future/ current teachers who are working on their certification. I look forward to working with you!

My extensive background, including classroom teaching and online tutoring, equips me to adapt quickly and create meaningful connections with my students. Outside of tutoring, I enjoy delving into literature and history, which not only enriches my teaching but also keeps my own curiosity alive.
I have been teaching in my own classroom since I received my degree in Special Education and certification in Elementary Education in 2012 from Western Washington University. I have taught in K, 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th grade classrooms. While I was going to school, I tutored for the Tree House Fostering Program in middle school math and English. After teaching for a few years, I went back and earned my masters degree in Curriculum Design and Instruction. This helped me develop a deeper understanding of using and adapting any curriculum, and creating my own curriculum both for classroom and for tutoring settings. I am passionate about learning, and I love to pass on that excitement to my students. I believe that making learning interactive is critical, and that the more ways a student is exposed to an idea, the more likely it is that the new learning will stick. I have tutored all Elementary subjects, and middle school Language Arts. Reading and writing are my favorite subjects to teach, because there are many personal ideas brought into these subjects, and within them, we can explore any idea that we wish to delve into. I have a very active style of teaching and tutoring. I like students to keep both their bodies and their brains focused, and that means that learning can be done through movement, song, coloring and games. I do believe that mastery of a concept is critical as well, so I do include many formative assessments and more formal assessments and quizzes. Outside of teaching, I have a little farm, and we raise animals and do a lot of gardening.

I tutor because I know what it’s like to struggle in school. I’ll never forget the day my high school counselor told me I might never go to college. Her words stung, but the inspiration the words gave me is irreplaceable. She drove me to succeed. My new found motivation propelled me from a C student to the top ten percent of my graduating high school class. From there I began my degree in Biochemistry at Western Washington University, which I will receive in June 2015.I tutor chemistry, physics, biology and math. I also provide test prep for the SAT and MCAT. I have worked at my university’s tutoring center for over a year. This taught me to teach quickly and effectively. I never had more than 15 minutes with a student, but my job depended on my ability to help them understand a concept, whether it was algebra or organic chemistry. I also worked with the Compass 2 Campus program, where I tutored and mentored middle school students from low-income schools.I always like to get to know the students I work with. I love hearing about their goals and interests. It allows me to tailor my style to each individual student, and make coursework relevant to them. I hold all my students to high standards, but I give everything I’ve got to make sure they achieve them.
I am a master's student at Western Washington University studying how nitrogen moves around an ecosystem. I did my undergraduate at Michigan Tech University where I studying Environmental Sciences and Math, which consequently are my two favorite subjects to tutor! While these two may seem very different, at their core, they're all about how things work. I've always found that if you peak behind the curtain at how something works, nothing is as scary or difficult as it may seem. Let's figure it out together!
I have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biochemistry from Western Washington University with a focus on material science. The subsequent year I graduated from the University of California Riverside with a master's degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. I have been tutoring for over four years, working with a wide variety of students. During my undergraduate studies I tutored gifted high school students looking to excel in AP and IB classes as well as on the SAT to prepare them for a strong college career. I also spent considerable time with college students in my field and similar programs. Students have always given positive reviews when I ask them about the experience, commenting that the time was enjoyable and that learning came naturally. In my opinion, this is the best way to truly learn something. Outside of the classroom, I have a large set of hobbies and interests. I enjoy basketball, tennis, road biking, mountain biking, skiing, running, chess, working on my car, watching football, and going to the gym.
It is my hope that we, together, can move you to a point of understanding in science. I am here to assist you in anyway I can. We are a team. Learning science and math is thought, in some circles, to be fun. I, rather find science and math to be awe-inspiring and "cool" stuff that allows me to see and appreciate the world around me. We can learn to appreciate the world around us together. I have taught high school 9th grade Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Algebra II and other College-in-High School classes (for college credit). At the college level, I have taught general chemistry, general Biology, majors Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry for Nurses, basic Nutrition, Nutrition for Nurses, and Environmental Science for over 30 years. I am now retired, and available to assist both high school and college students. For my college students, over the years all but one of my course offerings have filled with in 72 hours of being opened.
