I am a former high school English teacher with an MFA in Writing from Pacific University Oregon, a BA in English from The University of Texas at Austin, and a lifetime teaching certification for the State of Texas in Secondary English. I spent six years in the classroom and covered all aspects of English/Language Arts. I taught grammar, reading comprehension, test-taking strategies, study skills, writing (including personal narratives, persuasive essays, research papers, creative writing, and essays for standardized tests). I also taught all forms of literature, including poetry, novels, short stories, mythology, Shakespeare, and The Odyssey. I worked in nonprofit education reform and served in an instructional leadership role for a prestigious and rigid alternative certification program. I had the opportunity to work hands-on with new teachers in both elementary and secondary grade levels for both public and charter school systems. I observed, coached, and advised new teachers in their classroom practices, lesson-plan preparations, and implementation of those lesson plans. Teaching is at the core of my unique skillset. I am a well-rounded individual with an ability to relate and connect with students and adults of all ages. This is especially due to my diverse career background, my competitive weightlifting hobby, and my wide love for reading. These things keep me grounded, focused, and dedicated. I love teaching students of all ages and helping them to succeed and to love learning. Teaching requires a unique combination of communication skills, metacognition, patience, and an appreciation for challenges. It is my job to ensure a student can relate to the material, stay focused on the lesson, and discover motivation while working towards the end goal. I want every student I work with to walk away learning something new, to feel a sense of accomplishment, and to experience increased confidence at the end of each session. Finally, I know the best teachers are the ones who understand the importance of being a student themselves. As a result, the more I teach, the more I learn about the subject. This enables me to put myself in my students' shoes and see things from their perspective while also fully understanding the adult perspectives of their teacher and parents. Thank you! Jodi

I'm also passionate about music and make fitness a regular part of my routine through working out.
I tutor the LSAT because I know it's a hard test and I know what it's like to struggle with it. However I also understand the process necessary to produce better scores, and nothing is more satisfying to me than helping someone achieve what seemed impossible a few months ago.
Math problems can be really hard, I know this well! I will help you to understand math problems in a step-by-step way, so that you not only complete your assignments, but also come away with a deeper understanding of the material.
I'm a college student at UT Austin studying Philosophy and Biomedical Engineering. I've tutored students from 2nd grade to college in subjects ranging from basic math to E & M Physics, but most of my experience is in SAT and ACT prep. I have pride in my ability to assess where students are and what they need to achieve their goals, and hope to work with many more students through Varsity.
I am a Biochemistry undergraduate at the University of Texas. In addition to my major, I research molecular and systems biology with a focus in genetic regulation of biological pathways.I am very passionate about science and math and frequently tutor in these subjects. My approach to tutoring these subjects is to allow the student to fully comprehend the logic behind the concepts. In order to do this, I frequently use pictures, diagrams, models, and physical representation of the process at hand. Allowing the student to visualize the process gives them a greater ability to understand problems related to it. This approach is especially useful in science and math because they are subjects describing the phenomena of the physical world! Allowing the student to see the process which they are learning always proves beneficial to overall comprehension. When I'm not working in lab or classes, I love to scuba dive and enjoy some of the great outdoor activities Austin has to offer!
Everyone deserves an opportunity, and my opportunity is to pass on what I've learned to those who seek interest, ingenuity and drive in the infinite possible fields of education!
I believe that everyone deserves to be helped to the best of their abilities. I struggled in school, and thanks to the help of a strong community they helped me succeed. I'd like to be part of that community for any person.
I am graduate of Harvard Law Schooland Teachers `College, Columbia University, where I received a Master's degree in Early Childhood Education with a bilingual extension in Mandarin Chinese. I am available for both LSAT tutoring and small group and individual sessions with young learners.I love working with young learners to nurture their natural curiosities and growth through lessons that are engaging, interactive, and unique to their learning needs and interests. I have had the opportunity to work with students from ages 2-9 in pre-K, kindergarten, first, and mixed grade classrooms around the world, both in-person and virtually. Teaching is my passion and I believe that learning can be fun while also helping students to become stronger and more confident learners.
Words are my tools. Journalistically trained and educated, I respect the craft of understanding and building narratives. I believe that every person has a story to tell, and it is my privilege and responsibility to help others share their story with the world. I bring that same mindset as a teammate, creative partner, and instructor, looking into everyone to uncover their unique abilities and help bring them forth in positive, powerful ways. I am looking for people on a shared mission to help and heal, to unlock truth, to stimulate discovery, and to guide communities through their own journey of thought, revelation, and empowerment.
I am currently a student at the University of Texas at Austin. I am working towards my Bachelor of Science in Human Development & Family Sciences with a focus on Early Childhood. In addition, I am pursuing a Minor in Business Foundations and following a Pre-Medicine course track. I have always had a passion for teaching others ever since I was a child and have had previous tutoring experience in high school. This past Summer, I had the opportunity to travel abroad to Italy to study different teaching methods and compare the differences between Italian approaches and American approaches to education. These experiences had led to me believe that teaching styles are detrimental to a student's success in and out of school. I am most passionate about math and sciences, but I am also able to adapt to any subjects that my students may need help in. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, cooking, and watching films.
As a tutor, I not only ensure my students make the grade, I nurture their academic self-esteem and innate intellectual curiosity. I do this by focusing on what my students know before turning to what they do not know. I take the time to understand and mentor my student’s particular gifts, using their individual strengths to conquer their individual academic challenges and become confident, creative, lifetime learners. By encouraging questions and providing hands-on interactive lessons which consist of substantial modeling (“see one”), guided practice (“do one”), and checking for understanding (“teach one”), I ensure my students understand the “why” rather than merely memorize the “that.”I am “HQ” (Highly Qualified) certified to teach Social Studies for grades 7-12. I currently teach a sophomore level ethics class at St. Edwards University. I taught several classes at The University of Texas at Austin as a Doctoral Candidate, where I also earned my M.A. in Philosophy. At the University of Southern California, I earned my B.A. with Departmental Honors along with the Discovery Scholar’s award for excellence in independent research. I have been tutoring and teaching for eleven years, with a primary emphasis on developing my students’ writing and critical thinking skills. In Renaissance Man fashion, I pursue well-roundedness. I let my imagination run free by playing World of Warcraft, watching Star Trek, and reading fantasy novels like The Chronicles of Narnia and Harry Potter. I support my physical health by practicing yoga, camping, and experimenting in the kitchen with healthy, delicious, recipes. I soothe my soul by spending time with my family and friends, singing in my church’s choir and curling up with my husband and four cats to enjoy a relaxing evening at home.
