I am currently pursuing my bachelor's degree at Cornell University, likely in mathematics. I am most interested in applied mathematics in the finance and sports industries through quantitative finance and sports analytics. Thus, my favorite subjects to tutor are quantitative onesalthough I can also tutor other sections of standardized tests such as the SAT. I am passionate about tutoring students because I firmly believe, with proper instruction, one can grow and improve their understanding of any subject, no matter the difficulty. Students I tutor will have ample opportunities to apply what they are learning to example problems, as I believe practice makes perfect. Outside of school, I play ice hockey and ski during the winter.

After graduating from Cornell University with my Bachelors in Physics and German Studies, I am currently enrolled in the Materials Science and Engineering PhD program at the University of Michigan. I enjoy tutoring students because I was once on the other side of the table! While at Cornell, a physics graduate student provided me with supportive, concept-based, and empathetic tutoring that greatly increased my self-confidence and mastery of the course material. In my tutoring sessions, I use many techniques which I learned from him, and my #1 goal is to empathize with the student and make them feel valued despite their academic struggles. My tutoring sessions focus on helping the student understand the "why" -- "why is equation X appropriate and not equation Y?". From my own experience, this approach allows students to fully understand the course material and apply it in a variety of settings, from academia to careers and internships.I have completed over 500 hours of tutoring at 3 different companies, and have proofread cover letters and resumes for adults seeking new job opportunities. I continue to keep my German skills sharp by regularly watching German television and news, and have achieved CEFR Level C2 Proficiency (highest possible) in all areas of the German language (reading, writing, speaking, and listening).

I love connecting with students and empowering them to get to where they want to be academically. My students have ranged in age from as young as 6 years old to college-aged. I've been tutoring individually for over 8 years now, and I specialize in helping students with chemistry, biology, math, and test-prep.

I am a 2014 graduate of Cornell University's College of Engineering where I earned a Bachelor's Degree in Biological Engineering. I have just begun my Master's Degree in Biomedical Engineering at Drexel University. My favorite subjects to tutor include Test Prep and elementary/middle school subjects. I enjoy helping younger students so that they can be excited about learning and begin their education with a solid foundation in reading, writing, and mathematics. I believe it is important to provide students with the proper tools to succeed at a young age so that they continue to have a desire to learn for the rest of their lives. I loved my college experience and want to show high school students that with practice and diligence, they too can perform well on standardized tests and go on to the university of their choosing. To accomplish academic goals at any level, it is important for the student to have fun while learning! I personalize my teaching approach to fit the student's learning style so that he or she can easily transition from learning a concept to applying it to a given problem. The greatest reward is seeing the smile on a student's face when a topic "clicks".Outside of tutoring, I enjoy exploring Philadelphia, baking, exercising, watching football with friends, and decorating my apartment.

BA Cornell University • Current Grad Student, History University of Pennsylvania
7+ Years Tutoring

I am a recent graduate of Cornell University with a bachelors degree in both English and History and am currently pursuing my Masters degree in History at the University of Pennsylvania. My long-term goals include enrolling in a Phd program in the History department and becoming a form of history or social studies teacher post-graduation. I currently work with Varsity Tutoring as an online tutor and want to expand my tutoring opportunities. During my time at Cornell, I participated in a tutoring program for two years called AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) which is an organization that aims to close the achievement gap between students and prepare them for college and other postsecondary opportunities. Many of the goals that were part of the program, such as teaching students skills and behaviors for academic success, providing intensive support to maintain positive student/teacher relationships and developing a sense of personal achievement through hard work.Part of AVID meant working with students from historically underrepresented communities. These students often had family problems or were the first person in their family hoping to attend college. I had to work with these students, through their personal problems and insecurities to develop a successful academic plan for success. As a tutor, I am extremely meticulous and keen on time management. I usually tutor in English or History for the regents, SAT subject tests, or Advanced Placement exams. My course of action involves three main steps:First, I identify the areas that the student needs the most help in. I prepare a simple and easy to read outline for them on the subject. I also make a few flash cards to get the student started, even if flashcards arent their preferred study method. This way, we have a starting point to work from. A tutor should put in just as much effort as their student is putting in. From my perspective, successful tutoring involves equal input and effort from both parties involved.Second, I identify the learning style of the student and ask them questions about what learning methods they prefer. This way, I can adjust the way I tutor in accordance to what works the best for the student. I want to be flexible as a teacher to be able to work with a particular students learning style, whether its hands on, visual, auditory, etc. When a student has a problem, I want to be able to work with other teachers to figure out the best way to give the student the support they need.Lastly, I create a tutor schedule with the student and show them exactly what we will review and how we will review it. This is to create a sense of organization for the student and myself. I want the student to provide feedback on tutoring methods because their input is crucial to the success of the tutoring. Communication between the tutor and student is key because if something is not working or the student is not understanding a particular topic, we need to work together to find a method that will work better for the student.Whether I tutor in large or small groups, I focus on the learning experience. I want my students to strength their imaginations, foster creativity, and put in the hard work that it takes to become independent as a student. I believe that giving these skills to students will allow them to become prepared for college and leave the world a better place than they found it. I hope that I can help facilitate the students in this rewarding process. I thank you for taking the opportunity to read my application and hope to hear back from you.

I am a graduate of Cornell University's College of Arts and Sciences. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry with Distinction in 2015. Since graduation, I was a physics/chemistry teacher and soccer coach at a private school in Virginia for a year, where I led the soccer team to an undefeated season. Before teaching and coaching professionally, I was a Teaching Assistant for the Cornell Math and Physics Departments, where I taught many subjects including calculus, mechanics, electromagnetism. Throughout my time at Cornell and as a teacher, I tutored subjects ranging from the SAT to AP Physics and Algebra II, which is where my true talents lie: in small group or one-on-one settings where I can give students the full attention they deserve and tailor my approach specifically to their learning styles. This is why I am now pursuing tutoring as a part-time occupation at Varsity Tutors. I embrace teaching all math and science subjects, especially physics and calculus, at both the college and high school level and will go above and beyond to make sure all of my students succeed, according to their definition of success. In my spare time, I enjoy playing league soccer, basketball, tennis and guitar, and also like to travel and see as much of the world as I can.

I love tutoring students because of how fun and rewarding it is. I attended Jericho High School where I was secretary of the peer tutoring club. I tutored over 50 hours each year in algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, biology, chemistry, and physics. My favorite subject tutor has always been any level of math through AP Calculus BC. I have also been an SAT tutor at my local test prep center in my senior year of high school. I'm currently a sophomore at Cornell University working towards a bachelor of arts in biological sciences. As a tutor, my ultimate goal is to make sure my students feel confident enough about a subject to answer questions without any help and feel prepared for their exams. I truly enjoy the tutoring process and the ability to help students find their own potential in any subject. I hope to be a good fit for any tutee, and I am willing to put the hours and effort in order to get improved results.
