I am a graduate of the University of Chicago. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Physics with a specialization in Astrophysics. I have tutored middle school and high school aged students in math and science for over two years. Coming from such a technical background, I know that many students find these subjects intimidating, but I always personalize my approach so that they won't be quite so boring and formal. Math and science are less scary, and more fun, when we can relate them back to real world examples. Different students have different needs, so tutoring one-on-one can be a lot more beneficial than classroom learning simply because the teacher can personalize their lessons to fit each student. Moreover, as long as the student really does want to master the material, even lofty goals are reachable given enough time and a breakdown of the material into small pieces. When both parties are willing to put in effort, it’s hard to fail. And if the student doesn’t truly want to learn the material, then it’s important to ask why that is, and how to change that mindset—because as “useless” as many students think learning how to, say, calculate an integral or write an essay analyzing Austen is, most of the skills they pick up along the way do serve some purpose later in life, both directly and indirectly.Outside of tutoring and academic pursuits, I am on the debate team and plan on either doing debate or mock trial during my years at UChicago. I am passionate about teaching and understand that students have a variety of learning styles. I'm an energetic math teacher who loves to help students increase their motivation. As part of tutoring, I like to help students strengthen their problem solving skills, and help them know what to do when they feel stuck.

While working towards my Chemistry degree at the University of Oklahoma, I worked as a chemistry, biology, and Spanish tutor both through the University and via self-employment. It has always been my greatest passion to help someone navigate with ease a subject which they have previously regarded as difficult or stressful. I would describe my tutoring philosophy as one where I do less talking than necessary--it's my belief that engaging my student in this way will improve their learning exponentially, while also making the session considerably more enjoyable! I am now working towards my Ph.D. in Chemistry at the University of Chicago and tutoring part time. I am available for online as well as in-person tutoring.
