Hey guys!I graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2016 with degrees in Math and German, and will be pursuing a masters in Statistics at the University of Chicago beginning Fall 2017.I've tutored on and off since my senior year of high school, both at the middle school and high school levels, but in particular I'm looking forward to helping college students improve their GRE scores. Math is everywhere. Yet, it can be one of the most difficult subject for many students. My goal as a teacher is to first learn which subjects and hobbies that my student enjoys. And, then show how almost every topic within math is utilized by that student. Once I motivate that student to want to learn more about the subject matter, it is a matter of time before my student masters that topic and want to learn about another topic. It is a great confidence booster and a lesson for life. The student believes that if they can conquer the most difficult subject, then can master anything in life.

My goal is not just to help students with a tough class or a standardized test, but also to teach them learning skills they can apply to the next challenge. When you work with me, we're not just practicing algebra (or whatever); we're practicing the kinds of behaviors that will help you succeed in future math classes. I received my Masters degree in Humanities with a focus in Cinema and Media Studies from the University of Chicago. I received my B.A. in English and Philosophy from the University of Chicago, where I was active on the debate team. Afterwards, I moved to Boston (my family is originally from New England). I supported myself working as a lab technician while I did some free-lance writing for community newspapers. In 1989 I moved to Atlanta, where my family was living. I was a caseworker for the state of Georgia in Clarke, Gwinnett, Dekalb and Carroll counties where I worked extensively with the Latino, Vietnamese, Bosnian, and Somali communities. I was accepted into the M.A. program in the History and Philosophy of Science at Florida State University; my concentration was in the history of biology and religion. While there I assisted teaching classes in history and film, gave guest lectures, organized and taught writing workshops, and tutored students in writing and history on an individual basis. I enjoyed my teaching experience at FSU because it allowed me to combine my interest in history and writing. My students reported that as their writing improved, their academic performance improved in all their classes-- even in the sciences. I think the ability to write well cultivates skills that can be transferred to nearly any discipline. After I received my M.A., I returned to Atlanta to stay with my father, and plan to apply to the library science program at Valdosta State University. I enjoy teaching British and American literature, especially poetry, but my great love is history and the teaching of writing. I was in high school when I first fell in love. How could I resist its simplicity and elegance? I'm referring to math, of course, but I didn't always like the subject. Until about age 16, I thought of math as a boring, mind-numbing process of blindly memorizing formulas and then forgetting them after the test, but a series of wonderful teachers showed me the truth. I had thought that everything in math was invented arbitrarily just to torture students, but actually it all made sense in a deep way. When I caught a glimpse of what math really was, I found it irresistible and I ended up majoring in math in college at UChicago. I'm currently a Master's student in Computer Science at NYU.
