I am a middle school math and science teacher with 7+ years of experience in both general and special education. I have a BA in Biology and an MA in Biology Education. I am certified to teach in New York and California and have extensive experience with private and online tutoring.

I am eager to help learners of any age and educational background thrive through providing careful listening, guidance, and feedback. I enjoy teaching a variety of subjects ranging from statistics to psychology to the Japanese language. I was born in New York, NY, and grew up in northern New Jersey attending the local public school system and the Japanese Weekend School of New Jersey. After completing two high school diplomas, I pursued a Bachelor's of Arts degree in Psychology at New York University and worked in New York, NY for six years in private industry. I returned to higher education, moving to Boston where I conducted research, taught, and studied Clinical Psychology. After completing a Master of Liberal Arts in Clinical Psychology at Harvard University, I moved to Salt Lake City, UT to pursue a PhD in Psychology (Clinical Neuropsychology). I am proficient in SPSS, Stata, APA formatting, and research methods for the behavioral sciences. I have limited exposure and experience with R and MATLAB.
Look, learning can be toughbut it's rewarding in the end, and done right, it can be a lot of fun. My goal is to help students learn and succeed, but also to help them have a good time while doing it.Part of what I love most about being a journalist is breaking things down and making them understandable to the massesbasically, teaching people new things. If they don't comprehend and retain that knowledge, I haven't succeeded in my job, just like a tutor. I've been informally tutoring people for years, whether it's helping children study for classes while babysitting in high school and college or helping classmates learn and prepare for school all the way back to my elementary school days. In one form or another, I've been helping people learn almost as long as I remember.A great tutor needs to be intelligent, with a comprehensive, intuitive understanding of the subject matter. It's not enough to just know the answers to questions; a tutor needs to understand why the answers are what they are. A great tutor needs to be compassionate, patient, understanding, and kind, to help create a safe, creative and comfortable environment for the student to learn. And a great tutor needs to be empathetic, to be able to put him/herself in the student's shoes and understand why he or she might be having trouble.
I received my Bachelor of Arts in Economics from New York University. In addition to studying economics, I took a "pre-medical" course of study, which included several science classes each year. While I was in college, I tutored students ranging from 10 to 18 years of age in reading, writing, math, and science. Additionally, I helped students prepare for standardized exams, such as the PSAT and SAT, with solid improvements in scores. I believe this experience with a diverse mix of students has sharpened my skills as a tutor, particularly in the arena of creating interesting and clear examples through which different students can understand complex material. Although I tutor a wide variety of subjects, I most enjoy tutoring elementary and high school level math because I can be creative in designing examples. I truly enjoy teaching; there is a great satisfaction in helping students comprehend new information. Since graduating from college I have been working as an Emergency Medical Technician and I have been taking some graduate level biology classes. In my spare time, I enjoy playing basketball, reading about astronomy, and watching stand-up comedy.
My passion for teaching comes from my interests in different subjects. I love finding new ways to explain difficult concepts to students because it allows students to gain confidence in their work.
I take a holistic approach to teaching, considering the psychology behind academic success. I listen closely to students with a spirit of non-judgement and empathy to create a safe space that allows them to openly express the challenges they are facing with their academic work. I havefound that treating students with kindness, empathy and respect can transcend barriers to learning. I aim to empower my students and to create an optimal learning environment that helps students get inspired and stay engaged.I articulate and remind my students that I am invested in their success and well-being, in addition to fostering learning and intellectual development. I don't take a one size fits all approach. I teach students from all walks of life, ranging from young adults to adults in their 60s who have had successful careers and have returned to the university in their later years. Some of my students work full-time and may have children and/elders to care for at home. This kindof diverse student population requires flexibility. I meet students where they are to promote learning. The goals of my teaching include helping students: 1. understand, 2. reflect on, and 3. articulate key concepts. I evaluate student progress based on these three learning outcomes. I ask myselfthe question, did learning take place? Another key goal of my approach is teaching students how to bring greater clarity to their writing. Though it tends to send students back to the drawing board, so to speak, they are oftengrateful for what they learn and how it can serve their lives and chosen careers.

I have extensive experience teaching French at the high school and university levels as well as many years' experience tutoring adults and children in French. I am passionate about transmitting French language and French/Francophone cultures to students of the French language and my lessons often include music, films, and other cultural productions in order to highlight the diversity of French and Francophone cultures. I also have experience teaching French grammar and syntax at the beginner and advanced levels. The above prepares me to deliver excellent French lessons to students.Outside of teaching and tutoring French, I am a seasoned interdisciplinary researcher with expertise in French and European studies, anthropology, cultural studies, history, and philosophy as well as academic writing (research papers and theses). My educational background and scholarly work in the humanities prepare me to deliver excellent instruction in European History, World History, English, Academic Writing and Editing, and ESL/ELL.
