I grew up in Los Angeles and moved to Nashville to attend Vanderbilt University, where I am currently a sophomore pursuing a bachelor of arts degree in Medicine, Health, and Society. Being a student, Ive understood the frustration of not knowing what to do or who to turn to in the moment I dont understand something. This feeling can be very disheartening, but having the right person to guide you can make all the difference. For struggling students, I want to be that person to help them reach their full potential. In high school, I tutored people (mostly high school students like myself at the time) within the community, and it was personally rewarding every time I saw a student gain confidence in their studies.I believe that learning should be enjoyable, comfortable, and productive for everyone. Because every person learns differently, it is important to decide what learning style suits each student best and to establish an environment where the student is comfortable to actively engage and ask for any help they need. Therefore, my teaching style is rather flexible, accommodating, and goal-oriented.I tutor many subjects ranging from English, math, Spanish, social sciences/humanities and test prep. I enjoy tutoring subjects within social sciences because I find them the most interesting to discuss, as well as test prep because it is very straightforward to teach. Outside of school and work, Im interested in art, music, fashion, photography and volunteering.

I graduated from Vanderbilt University with a Bachelor's degree in Political Science. I began learning French in college and decided to continue learning by working in France as an English Language teaching assistant in French public schools. While in France, I also privately tutored French students in English. My students ranged from ages 6 to 17, so I helped them learn everything from the English alphabet to writing essays for their English literature class and prepping for standardized tests. I earned my Masters degree in International Affairs from the American University and Paris, and decided to continue studying. I am a recent Emory law school graduate. I am passionate about building students' confidence in all subjects, but I am most fulfilled when students can express themselves in new ways through language and writing.

I am a graduate of one of the top universities in the nation, Vanderbilt in Nashville, TN. My degree is in Elementary Education with an academic specialization in Spanish. I also have my Masters in Middle School English from Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Originally from Kentucky, I gained my love for learning when I attended a reputable boarding school in the Northeast. There I learned about different cultures, high academic standards and how to be a good student. I also realized I wanted to teach. After college in the South, I came up to New York City and worked in a s school as a career coach for college students as well as adults. From there I was asked to come back to the boarding school to teach middle school English and high school Spanish. In addition to teaching, I was a dorm parent for senior girls. As I raised my own children, I took on the role of Head Dorm Parent, which was very rewarding. When my children were in school, I went back to teaching; this time in public education. I have spent the last 16 years as a certified English teacher and love every minute of it. This is what I was born to do.I believe every person can learn and improve - with support. My educational philosophy is that of the constructivist theory whereby the teacher begins with what the students already know and we go from there.I am nurturing, creative and a very good teacher/tutor. I can help students understand the material and buy into their work in order to get the most out of learning. I have a strong passion for teaching and learning.
I received my doctorate from Vanderbilt University in Physics and Materials Science with a concentration in carbonaceous nano-materials. My passion for education stems from the fact that in high school I received a C in physics in my first term. I was determined to get a A to keep my streak of A's in science going. At the end I received a B-. I went on to study physics because it challenge me to think out of the box and find alternative solutions to problems. Physics describes the world we live in holistically. My teaching philosophy is about dedicated practice. I have a laid back approach to showing you how to attack the problems from a numerical and literary perspective.

I am currently entering my senior year at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. I am majoring in Medicine, Health and Society on the pre-medical track with two minors in French Language and Culture and History of Art. In regard to my tutoring experience, I have been a part of an organization at Vanderbilt called Next Steps since my freshman year and am currently serving on the executive board. This organization works with students with intellectual disabilities by providing them with tutoring services and support in all aspects of their lives so they can live as independently as possible. I have been a tutor for the organization since I first joined and it has given me vital experience working with all types of students from all sorts of backgrounds. While I've always had an interest in a wide range of academic subjects, I feel the most passionate about science, math and language comprehension. The academic philosophy that one must understand and learn material instead of simply memorizing it has always been a core component of my teaching style. I hope to impart this same set of beliefs on the students that I tutor. In my spare time, I love to read and I try to stay creative by frequently drawing and painting.
Hi, I'm Gregory Bernstein. I'm a senior at Vanderbilt University and I'm majoring in Political Science. More than anything else, what makes me a great tutor is experience. I've been tutoring students for four years and look forward to tutoring new students with Varsity Tutors.Primarily, I work with students on SAT test prep and have seen students increase their SAT composite score by more than 350 points after working with me. I've also tutored students who were initially struggling in a variety of AP subjects and went on to earn 4s and 5s on their AP tests.Additionally, I teach debate and public speaking to 30-40 students each year (as part of a speech and debate institute that I own and teach at) and have spent countless hours understanding what strategies and techniques are required to be an effective teacher. I believe that after tutoring, coaching, and teaching for 4 years, I've learned a great deal not only about what I teach, but about how to teach. I'm very interested in pedagogy and am always asking myself "is this the most effective way to teach this subject or this concept," "what is the pedagogical merit in this approach," and "am I making sure that the student I'm tutoring isn't just hearing what I'm saying, but is understanding it as well?" I've had a significant amount of time to test out various teaching methods and learn what works for different types of students. I strongly believe that individualized tutoring strategies are needed for each students because there are many different types of learners.
