I am a current medical student in Boston. I previously worked for 3 years as an English teacher and journalist in Rome, Italy. I grew up in Houston, TX and received my Bachelors degree in theHistory of Art and Architecture from Boston University. Over the past few years, I've had the opportunity to teach in diverse environments including both public and charter schools and art museums and galleries. Being a visual person myself, I find that learning can be a lot of fun when you are able to situate yourself in the setting of a certain subject matter. Want to know about ancient Egypt? Try discovering the etymology of words by taking a look at some Latin manuscripts written by monks centuries ago! As you can see, I like to draw in a lot of historic visual references to help learning a lot more dynamic and exciting.I love teaching others about the subjects that mean the most to me: history and the English language. I find It is important to learn about the mistakes and triumphs of the past in order to understand how our actions today can have a positive or negative impact in the future. And I truly believe that effective communication is key in every aspect of life, from getting to know other people, to being able to evaluate situations intelligently, and spreading worthwhile ideas, both verbally and in written form.Even though I find learning a lot of fun, I do get out from time to time, too. I am currently a postdoctoral associate at Yale University conducing research in genetics/neuroscience. Throughout the years I have had many opportunities to interact with and train students. From 2007 to 2009, I tutored and occasionally taught math classes at the Minnesota Internship Center, a charter school in Minneapolis, MN that primarily serves Somali immigrants. During this time, I was also a tutor for the Macalester College Department of Physics and Astronomy, where I obtained my B.A. in physics and mathematics in May 2009. This teaching encompassed typical introductory material (Newtonian mechanics and basic electromagnetism) for a variety of skill and interest levels, both calculus and non-calculus based. After substituting for 6 months, I moved to Los Angeles, California to pursue a career in Set Lighting. After two years of settling in, I joined a local non-profit tutoring group. Initially, I helped elementary school students with creative writing projects, and then I moved to general after-school tutoring sessions, where ages ranged from 6-14. I'm most comfortable tutoring Math (up to Calculus) and Science related subjects, as well as helping with expository writing assignments. To me, Math and Science can be treated very much like puzzles and thus can be be broken down into small, enjoyable pieces that motivate the student to learn and build upon. Expository writing is related to Math and Science to me because all three involve logical explanations of subject matter. Expository writing is all about maintaining focus on proving the student's thesis. With that understanding in every paragraph, content just falls into place! My teaching style is built on respect: I refuse to patronize students by hand-holding them through assignments either by my tone of voice or over-involvement on my part. I think this is counterproductive, as it reinforces the idea that the student can't do assignments without outside help. Instead, I treat the student as a peer that only needs a new way to look at a problem. My goal is to to get each student, as quickly as possible, to a point where they feel confident enough to know they no longer need my help. When I'm not studying for my second degree or tutoring, I'm spending time with my family, working out in the gym, playing tennis or basketball, taking a ton of pictures, or playing guitar. I also like to keep up with current events and what's happening on the internet. Most importantly, I like to have a lot of laughs while I'm doing these things!

As a graduate in Applied Business Analytics from Boston University, I bring a strong analytical approach to tutoring subjects such as Algebra, Geometry, and Earth Science. With over 2 years of experience, I strive to create a supportive learning environment where students feel empowered to explore and understand complex concepts. My teaching philosophy centers on fostering curiosity and critical thinking, allowing me to connect with students on a personal level. I am passionate about helping students achieve their academic goals and build confidence in their abilities. Outside of tutoring, I enjoy exploring new technologies and engaging in outdoor activities, which helps me bring real-world applications into our lessons.

I have a high school degree and graduated Magna Cum Laude, and I currently attend Boston University. I have experience tutoring all age groups, from elementary to middle to high schoolers. My specialty is standardized test prep, but I tutor academic subjects as well. I have taken 11 AP classes and exams over the course of high school as well as 3 SAT subject tests. I received a 36 on the ACT and 1550 on the SAT. I love working with kids; I volunteer at my church in childcare, teach swim lessons, and babysit. Additional interests I have include music and soccer; I play the clarinet, saxophone, and piano. I love learning and I am excited to help others learn!

I am a Ph.D. Candidate in Medieval European History at the Catholic University of America, which means that I am a life-long learner who believes in the power of the humanities. My greatest attributes as a teacher are my patience, empathy, and humor - and of course my memory for random historical facts! I am originally from Columbus, Ohio and moved to Boston in 1999 to attend Boston University. There, I majored in History and English and minored in French, receiving my B.A. in 2003. I went on to receive an M.A. in Medieval History from Catholic University in Washington D.C. in 2007, and my Ph.D. dissertation, which is on religious women in 15th century Italy, is slated for completion in 2014. I currently reside in the New York City area as I finish researching and writing my thesis. I have taught World History (101-102), Medieval Europe and Pre-Modern Historical Seminar at the University level. My most recent teaching position was at Harvard as a teaching fellow for a class called Making the Middle Ages. Doing history well means being a convincing writer, and I have experience helping students at all levels write with both substance and style. In addition to perfecting English language skills for tests or essays, I love sharing knowledge about other languages like French, Latin, and Italian. Since I study a period that can be confusing - in languages other than my own- I am good at figuring out how to present complex material using diverse and engaging methods. Each of us has a different way in which we learn best and no way is better than another! As far as my interests outside of academia, I have a true passion for theatre. My performance experience helps me to be an outgoing and enthusiastic instructor who excels at both strictly organized lectures and more improvisational lessons. I have held numerous positions in arts non-profits in both Boston and D.C., as I love having jobs that support the community and promote creativity. In such customer service positions I have learned to communicate with people from all walks of life in a down-to-earth way. Thus, I have become a great listener, a quick problem-solver, and a better teacher. I look forward to using these skills to to create a unique and challenging tutoring plan centered around your needs.
