I have come a long way from that film student who had aspirations of becoming the next big writer/director, to the middle school math teacher I am now (and loving it).Having taught for twenty years, I have found the one subject that seems to be especially pervasive across the others is math. Thus, I have been able to teach basic math, honors algebra, and higher level math concepts by interspersing history, music, drama, creative arts, sports, literature, and film. An appearance on Who Wants to be a Millionaire has helped fuel student interest in knowing how one subject area affects another. I think this helps dispel the notion that math is all dry numbers and theory. My style in the classroom is very similar to my tutoring style. I listen, I observe, I plan accordingly. I have been able to work with students who previously had not a clue as to a specific concept and have had them walk away feeling confident about it, no longer fearing the subject when it has been brought up.While I specialize in math, I can be of great help to anybody needing help with history, literature, language arts, sociology, theatre, and film. When not imparting knowledge, I am busy outside, walking and playing with our dog, reading, writing, attending theatre, film, and most of all, playing general manager to my beloved New York Yankees.I look forward to working with you!

I am a freshman Computer Science major enrolled in the McCormick School of Engineering at Northwestern University. I have a passion for teaching students, and I am experienced with having to give one-on-one guidance in teaching many concepts. Tutoring is very rewarding for me because I am driven to help others and give whatever knowledge I have gained over the years in every field. I also have experience dealing with situations in which students are not quickly or readily grasping concepts, and I have developed the patience to handle these situations. Teaching is just as rewarding for the student as it is for me, because I am thrilled when I see others achieve, and I would love to be part of the process. In addition to high school AP courses and test prep, I have taken college level multivariable calculus, linear algebra, physics electricity/magnetism and mechanics, computer programming (c++, matlab, LISP/Scheme), Dynamics of Systems, and Mechanics of Systems.

I received my undergraduate degree from Northwestern University where I majored in History and Theater. After graduating from college, I worked as a professional actor and director in Chicago for three years. I decided I wanted to live abroad, so I taught English in Prague for a year, before returning to New Jersey to pursue my teaching career. I started my career in education as a middle school History teacher. From there I went back to school (Jersey City University) to get my Masters degree in Special Education and became a special education teacher. After working for several years as a special education teacher I decided to pursue my Masters of Arts degree in school administration. Since enrolling in and completing the graduate program I have had the opportunity to work in several leadership roles in public schools. I currently teach 4th grade math and science at an elementary school in Northern New Jersey. Additionally, I help organize my school district’s Special Education Department. I was first the coordinator of special education for a building servicing over 250 special needs students, with classifications ranging from Specific Learning Disabled to Autistic. From this position I transitioned into becoming a building supervisor where I was a member of the administrative team responsible for over 900 pre-kindergarten to eighth grade students. I am extremely excited to be tutoring for Varsity Tutors and to build a wonderful learning community. As a teacher resource coordinator of special education, I believe all children have the ability to learn and have the right to an appropriate education. This belief has driven me throughout my career and motivated me to become an instructional leader compassionate to every learner. This philosophy is rooted in my special education experiences as both a teacher and coordinator. As educators we must believe every student has the ability to achieve greatness and must work to insure they are afforded all opportunities to do so.Based on my previous experiences, my favorite subjects to tutor are Math and History. I also love to tutor students preparing for the SAT or ACT because I know that success on these standardized tests can unlock a great future for any child. When not working or tutoring, I enjoy playing sports, seeing theater, cooking, and reading.

My most recent project is an AI simulation of honey bee nectar gathering, which includes a fascinating dance they do to tell other bees where the nectar is outside the hive.I enjoy the teaching part of tutoring quite a bit. I have an engineering background, with a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Northwestern University. Upon completion of my graduate work in environmental and occupational health from the University of North Carolina (MS and PhD), I taught Industrial Hygiene (worker health and safety) at Purdue University for 32 years. The four most important underpinnings of the field of Industrial Hygiene are: 1) working with and caring about people, 2) a strong foundation in mathematics, 3) a strong foundation in science and 4) the ability to problem solve. I feel that my teaching experience, my educational background and most importantly, my commitment to helping students learn make me a perfect fit as your tutor for quantitative skills and admissions exams. As a university professor, I was involved in various types of research projects, interacting with both undergrads and grad students, but my favorite part of professoring was teaching. I feel that my greatest accomplishment as a professor was the success of my students, both during their time as students, and more importantly, in their careers. I have won a number of teaching awards, both within my School of Health Sciences and at the University level. I like to teach with examples and analogies. My exams consisted of a combination of multiple choice, essay and problem solving questions, so I am well versed in all types of questions the students will be faced with on homework or exams. Also, in addition to my teaching experience at Purdue, I have been teaching a one week course in Shanghai yearly since 2008 to prepare Chinese Occupational Health and Safety professionals to take the Certified Industrial Hygienist exam and part of what I help them with are some of the tricks of the trade for successfully taking these types of exams. I also helped my daughter prepare for her GRE exam when her GRE Boot Camp program was suddenly cancelled my prep work with her helped her increase her math score approximately 100 points. On a personal note, I am a loving, patient grandfather to 12 grandchildren. My side interests are playing the clarinet (since 4th grade) and traveling (I've been to China, South Korea, Singapore, Costa Rica, Mexico, Italy, Belgium, Switzerland and others.
