I've been an avid reader all my life. I've also been lucky: as an English teacher and tutor I get to share my love for literature and passion for writing with others. And because I've also worked for corporations, I know how important reading and writing skills are in the workplace. My education includes Bachelor's and Master's degrees in English along with lifetime Secondary and Community College Teaching Credentials. After teaching middle school, high school and community college English language and creative writing classes for more than 10 years, I took my reading and writing skills into the business world - first as a technical writer, "translating" documents and manuals into language that non-techies like me could understand. And then I transitioned into marketing communications where I really had to hone my writing skills: now I needed to describe products and services so that others would actually want to buy them!Ultimately I became a senior integrated marketing manager for a Fortune 100 company: that meant I had the responsibility and opportunity to help my staff improve their skills so they could be better at their jobs and advance their careers. While building my career, I volunteered as a tutor to children and adults in reading, vocabulary building, grammar and writing. Upon retiring, a few years ago, I ramped up my volunteer work as a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) working with children in foster care to help them navigate the many challenges and problems that they face. Because of their home environment history and sometimes unmet special needs, many children in foster care fall below grade level and need help to catch up and excel. As a tutor with Varsity Tutors, I bring subject matter expertise along with my experience in classroom teaching, tutoring, and the business world to help clients achieve their goals.

My experience includes tutoring students at the Atlanta Youth Academy (in south Atlanta) and abroad. At the end of 2012, I returned from two and a half years volunteering with the Peace Corps in Ecuador, South America. As a Peace Corps Volunteer, I worked with urban youth from a low-income neighborhood in the largest city in Ecuador. My projects included designing and implementing an internship program to promote leadership skills among young women aged 14-16; designing a curriculum and teaching natural science classes to 30 elementary and junior high students; and working with over 200 students at 4 different educational and extracurricular programs, teaching classes and tutoring individuals in Spanish, English, Algebra, the natural sciences, and the fine arts. During this time I discovered that I love working one on one with students. I am excited to be back in Atlanta and continuing to work with students!

As a lifelong learner and a former student of math, reading, and standardized test programs, I have learned how valuable an encouraging and motivating tutor can be.I started working at Kumon Math and Reading in 2012, and found a love for helping others learn. Overcoming their obstacles became a personal victory for me, and I enjoyed meeting with clients one or two days a week and watching them grow in their confidence in math and reading problems. I began nannying in 2014, and doing homework or practicing instruments is still my favorite time of the day.I believe the environment surrounding learning is the key to success. Growing up, my dad was the master of math problems, known for phrases such as "number eight, come on down! You're the next contestant on long division" (in the voice of Bob Barker). My goal is to impart the same sense of exuberance to my students as he did to me.I believe that the most important thing to gain from tutoring is not just a better score, but an increased confidence in abilities and an innate curiosity for learning. I look forward to learning more about your academic needs and dreams, and hope we can work together in the future!

I am a 2015 graduate of Northwestern University, with an undergraduate journalism major/Spanish minor and a graduate degree in journalism. During my time at NU, I spent a semester at Madrid's top-ranked university, taking upper-level history and literature courses with Spanish students. I now work at a trade magazine in Midtown covering real estate. My tutoring experience ranges from first-grade students memorizing their first set of vocabulary words to gifted middle schoolers working three grades ahead in language arts to stressed-out seniors applying to college. No matter the age or subject at hand, I try to bring a sense of process and purpose to my sessions, creating original lesson plans to supplement class materials. My ideal session ends with a student understanding not only individual problems, but also connecting concepts to other coursework, feeling confident about the class or material in the future.Outside of my current job in financial media and my evenings tutoring, I'm training for a half Ironman. I also enjoy exploring new spots in NYC, especially anywhere involving desserts.

I am currently studying at Northwestern University, on the track to a Bachelor of Arts in Statistics with a double major in Mathematical Methods in the Social Sciences, which is just a fancy way of saying math-based economics, and a minor in Legal Studies as well as Marketing. After my undergraduate studies, I plan on working in consulting for a few years before attending law school. Finally, I hope to combine my law studies with my consulting work to become a well-rounded corporate lawyer. At Northwestern, I provide SAT tutoring to Chicago-area juniors and seniors. In high school, I tutored third through fifth graders in basic reading and writing skills and developed their interpersonal skills through group crafts and teamwork activities. While I am open to tutoring a broad range of subjects and tests, I am most passionate about Math, Statistics, Economics, and US History. In my experience helping students prepare for the SAT, I have found that interactive activities and group work really help! I am a firm believer in the work-hard-play-hard mindset and find it to be absolutely necessary for a balanced lifestyle, and I try to impart this appreciation to all of my students. While I encourage my students to keep up with their studies and work hard, I also believe that studying needs to be balanced out with interests and fun.

Hi, my name is Hans and I am a recent graduate of Northwestern University in Chicago. While there, I majored in Economics and minored in International Studies with a focus in International Political Economy and Development. Beyond these classes, I also had a healthy, eclectic interest in a wide range of subject areas including Multivariable Calculus, Physics, and Film. It is also worth noting that I was able to accomplish all of this in three years, rather than four, due to my focus and success on AP tests. As for my specific tutoring experience, I have been teaching students since high school, and volunteering with local children of lower socioeconomic status for the past three years. These lessons have been for students of all ages ranging from elementary school to college. In high school I also excelled on the SAT (2220) and a plethora of AP tests (4s and 5s across the board), and so would be happy to aid with any test prep you may need.I am a very amicable person, and truly think that I could have a successful tutoring relationship with virtually anyone. I am happy to speak with you more prior to a lesson should you have any questions regarding my qualifications and/or character. Thank you for your time and I hope to work with you soon!
