After graduating from Rutgers University in Camden, NJ with my Master's degree in English, I taught at Williamstown Middle School for two years, and then at Livingston School in New Brunswick, NJ for three years. I worked with sixth through eighth grade students at these schools and learned the value of strong classroom management and differentiated instruction. While successful in my positions, I felt that there was even more that I could learn about being an effective teacher, as I never had the opportunity to student teach. Therefore, when I was offered an opportunity to shift to the New York City charter school system, I jumped at the chance. The three-week training program for Achievement First schools taught me more ways to manage my classroom and differentiate instruction, and also taught me how to create very effective lesson plans, the true value of purposeful assessments, and how to generate those. I even learned how to properly analyze my students' results in order to determine which skills I needed to re-teach and which skills I simply needed to review. When I shifted to Bushwick Ascend Middle School, not only was I able to continue with my learning of how to become an even better teacher, but I was also given the opportunity to be a Grade Team Leader, where I evaluated other teachers' lesson plans, and provided those teachers with feedback about their lesson plans and their actual lessons.Due to personal reasons, I chose to remain closer to home and began working as an Adjunct Professor at local colleges. Working with college students for two years showed me that I truly wanted to be back in the classroom full-time. Therefore, I accepted a position at Columbia High School as a one-year leave replacement within the English department. I taught ninth and tenth grade English, where I focused on writing instruction and assisting the students in preparing for the PARCC exam. While I enjoyed teaching at Columbia High School, I found my place at Maria L. Varisco-Rogers Charter School in Newark, NJ teaching seventh and eighth grade Language Arts and Writing.

I am a junior from Pittsburgh at the University of Michigan! I am studying Data Science in the College of Engineering. Math and science are certainly my favorite subjects, but I also scored very well on the reading and writing sections on the SAT and ACT. In the past, I have greatly enjoyed being a Judaic Studies teacher for kids ages 8-16 at my summer camp and tutored 6th and 7th graders in elementary computer programming. I am passionate about teaching because I realize how important it is to get individualized attention, and I remember the stressful period of junior-senior year with college applications.Outside of school, I like to read, listen to music, watch sports, and watch movies and Netflix. I am a diehard Steelers fan. My favorite book is To Kill a Mockingbird. My favorite music artists are Kendrick Lamar and Drake. My favorite movies are Shawshank Redemption and The Sixth Sense. My favorite TV series are Breaking Bad and Westworld.

I like to curate my teaching style for each student based on what works best for them. I firmly believe that not everyone has the same learning approach, so I want to ensure that you are passing your classes and attaining new information that you can use in the future. I understand what it's like to struggle in some aspects of school, and I am more than happy to share how I cope with difficult subjects and information. As a high schooler, I have tutored in the past, teaching ages from 4-18 years old. I can tutor a wide range of subjects, including mathematics, but the social sciences, hard sciences, and English are where I excelled the best. I hope to be a graduate student instructor in the future, and tutoring for Varsity Tutors will be an excellent opportunity to prepare! I am senior at the University of Michigan studying robotics and electrical engineering. I have worked as a robotics teacher for elementary students and I have several years of tutoring and teaching experience. While I tutor primarily in math, I also have experience using robotics as a tool to teach other subjects in order to engage students who love STEM from an early age without letting them fall behind in reading or grammar. Having been a student during the pandemic and a tutor through all stages of reopening, I understand how difficult it can be to learn online, so I make it a priority to be animated and engaging, going back to basics if necessary, and leave my students more comfortable to tackle problems on their own by the end of a session.

Hello, my name is Andrew, and I just graduated from St. Mary's Preparatory: a small, all-boys, prep school in Orchard Lake, Michigan. Next year I will be attending the University of Michigan: Ann Arbor with an intended major in Biology with a minor or double major in Spanish. Unlike many older tutors, I know what it is like to be a struggling high school student in today's world. I understand how much pressure you are under to get the score you need to be admitted into your dream school, and I am here to help you reach that score! I also understand how tedious college essays can be, and how important they are. I know the mechanics behind writing a strong admissions essay and the power of proofreading! For those students not quite ready for college applications, I can also tutor in Spanish 1,2,3 and English/Grammar. I have been taking Spanish classes for twelve years and have never received below an A: something I attribute to my deep interest in the language. I love the Spanish language and culture, and I love to share that passion with others. I know that Spanish class can be boring and extremely confusing at times, but with a little enthusiasm it can also become one of your favorite classes. I hope to hear from you soon!

After graduating with my MA in Latin from the University of Michigan, I found myself in unfamiliar territory. I had been a student my entire life, and suddenly, I was not. My eventual goal was (and still is) to earn a teaching certificate, but that is still a ways off. What else could I do? An idea hit me.Just because I am not a student anymore, however, does not mean I can't still dedicate myself to learning. There is no better way to do that than to help others learn too, and that is, most of all, what I want to do.I hope you, too, will learn with me.

In my life, I've had a handful of influential teachers and role models. They've guided me in my times of need and I am who I am today as a result. I hope to pay this forward by fulfilling that role in helping the next generation of learners become what they were meant to be! In my pre-university of days, I tutored through National Honors Society and worked as a martial arts instructor for 3-13 year-olds, so I'm great with kids! Currently, I am studying at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, pursuing a Bachelor's of Science degree in Biopscyhology, Cognition, and Neuroscience. There, I am an Evans Scholar, a Mu Epsilon Delta brother (a profession premedical fraternity, go premeds woohoo!) and on the Varsity Cheer Team. After college, I aspire to attend medical school and earn my place in this world as a doctor. In my time in academia, I've come to love the STEM subjects, as you can probably infer from my aspirations. Feel free to come to me with any of the topics that I offer, however especially I love tutoring in psychology, statistics, biology, and I'm pretty dandy with algebra. I am patient yet I expect a lot out of my students because I believe that my students should not only learn the material, but how to think. That being said, I try to make learning fun and show my students that it can be a hobby. Eventually, I hope to get my students to a place where they outgrow me. Consequently, this does not sadden me--it truly warms my heart to see my students grow and prosper. Outside of the classroom, I like to play my guitar, spend time outside usually playing sports, and I would be lying if I said I haven't been binging Netflix shows in this quarantine! I also love to talk about virtually anything and am starting my own podcast! All of this to say, I hope my services can be of help to you and feel free to reach out to me about anything!

I'm a college student attending the University of Michigan and I'm majoring in chemistry and computer science. I have two years of extensive experience tutoring high schoolers in chemistry and all subjects of the SAT and ACT. I can also say that I understand completely how difficult the process of test prep and high school chemistry can be because I recently survived the whole process myself having taken IB chem and the ACT/SAT in the last 1-2 years and studying and prepping extensively for them. That being said, I'm always super eager not just to tutor students in those subjects, but also to offer the best advice and guidance I can in tackling those challenges as a high schooler and as someone planning for college. I believe it's super important as a tutor not just to spoon-feed answers but to teach how to problem-solve, so I take care to solidify our understanding of the methods to approach a problem. Most of all, I try to be as flexible and communicative as possible.

I have lived all over the country and just moved back to Michigan after four years away. It’s great to be back, especially in time for the fall! I graduated from the University of Michigan with a BA in sociology in 2006 and again with an MSW (Masters in Social Work) in 2011; Go Blue! I am a social worker with over 10 years of nonprofit experience working with children and youth. I specialize in art and education programming and have worked with kids of all ages in a number of roles: tutor, mentor, nanny, assistant teacher, camp counselor, and program manager. My most recent position was as a Teacher Caregiver for a family in Chicagoland. Among my responsibilities, I provided daily homework help and academic tutoring for three kids ages 5, 9, and 11. Before that, I ran a tutoring and homework help after school program in Seattle for Somali refugees. Now that I’m back in Michigan I’m looking for individual students to tutor in a range of subjects. I’m comfortable with elementary and middle school math, language arts, study and organizational skills, Spanish, general homework help, and ISEE and SSAT prep. I’m also comfortable with ELL/ESL tutoring for all ages and some high school language arts and elective subjects (e.g. psychology). Please inquire for more details. I look forward to working with you!

In my free time, you will find me at the gym, running, playing basketball, and lifting weights. I believe exercise to be a fantastic stress reliever and motivator. I have over 250 hours of tutoring experience and am excited to tutor students with their homework or with test preparation. I recognize education is the gateway to a better living, so rest assured, I will make every effort to teach students the concepts, so they can apply their knowledge to unique situations. In a world of increasing automation, it is critical students are versatile and can adapt to new situations on the fly. To that end, I will teach them how to solve a problem rather than state the solution to the problem. Often times, students use my guidance to arrive at the solution themselves. This gives students confidence and sharpens their understanding. I will also motivate my students whenever necessary to keep them excited about learning Chemistry or Calculus. Some concepts can be tedious to learn, so it is important to never lose sight of its real world application. I look forward to tutoring my students and helping them reach the next level!
