I am passionate about helping students because I've been a student my whole life! Even though I'm a professor now, I love to learn. And now that I have experience, I love to help others along the learning journey. I have degrees in English and education from Rice University, UT Austin, Texas State, and Texas A&M. I also studied abroad in England at the University of East Anglia and have traveled to many countries. I tutor English and Spanish (my family is from Mexico City). My favorite thing to tutor is writing, and I have taught writing from the Kindergarten-graduate school (Ph.D.) level (what I currently do). I am here to share tools and tips to help you succeed in your learning journey.

I am a teacher who is certified in all core subjects for grades 4 through 8, Special Education, and English as a Second Language. I am eager for the opportunity to tutor you or your student, because I feel that small group instruction is the single best tool in increasing understanding. I love lesson design and as your tutor, I will be sure to work with you to create lessons that you find both engaging and effective.I have taught in Houston for the past three years. Prior to becoming an educator, I worked at an educational outreach program that promotes literacy throughout the greater Houston community and I was a teaching assistant for PSYC 101 at Rice. These varied experiences have given me a holistic approach when it comes to tackling misunderstandings and ensuring that all students feel confident, valued, and successful. Please feel free to reach out to me if you would like any additional information about my teaching style or qualifications. Hello all! I am Tegan, an undergraduate at Rice University majoring in Biosciences on the pre-med track. Throughout high school and college, I have realized that the key to a successful academic career is having educators that are truly invested in a student's education. Enthusiastic instructors created exciting and engaging lessons which led to more motivated students. With my experience tutoring middle school students and adult ESL learners, I aimed to be patient with student concerns and hold a positive attitude while teaching, embodying the supportive culture I thrived in. During tutoring sessions, I hope to instill in students confidence in the material and to take ownership of their learning.I have experience tutoring junior high students Algebra 1 and 2 for 6 months. This was in a small group setting of 2-3 for an hour once a week.As a biosciences major, I have taken a multitude of biology courses and have a passion for understanding the "why" to life. Through my studies and developed study strategies, I can help students with their AP Biology Exams.I look forward to having the opportunity to work with you all. Please reach out to me if you have any questions or feedback!
While I have a lot of admiration for school teachers and the work they do, I think personalized, private one-on-one tutoring is the best way to teach and learn. Happy students and happy tutors make the best results. That's why I am a tutor!First and foremost, I think it's very important to create a welcoming, respectful and relaxed learning environment that fosters communication and trust between tutor and student and one in which the student feels empowered. I'm a very patient and considerate person but can also be highly competitive and these attributes of my personality come through in my tutoring style. So while it's rewarding to teach children, introduce students to a new subject or help them improve at intermediate or advanced levels, if a student comes to me with a specific request such as helping them ace an exam, I will do my very best to help them reach that goal. I'm always open to questions and discussion, I listen to my students and I pride myself in providing helpful insights and finding fun, innovative and effective ways to teach and help students retain information. I want to help my students distinguish themselves!Growing up I wanted to be a history professor and continue to have an abiding interest in history. I graduated from Rice University in 2006 with a Bachelor's degree in History and in French Studies and then attended the University of Southern California where I received a Master's in Broadcast Journalism and documentary. During my free time I enjoy photography and film production, watching and playing sports, reading about history and health and speaking Spanish.
I recently graduated from the University of Virginia as a biomedical engineering major. I love math and science, mostly because I had some really great teachers who made these subjects fun for me. While at UVA, I had the opportunity to tutor a high school student in algebra, and I liked the experience so much that I now want to tutor even more! In addition to lots of math and science classes, I can also help with test prep, especially for the SAT, ACT, and GRE. In my free time, I like reading, playing racquetball, camping, and exploring new places. Let me know if I can help you in any of the subjects listed on my page!
Throughout my life, I've been blessed to have a number of great teachers and mentors. These key figures guided me through high school and college, helped me succeed in competitive fellowships like the Rhodes, and pushed me to grow both as a researcher and a leader. My career so far has been highly influenced by my teachers and mentors, and it is this knowledge that drives me to teach and to tutor. I want to establish mentoring relationships with the students I work with, so I can help lead them to success in the same way that I was as a student.Because of this drive to give back, I've already amassed a number of prior experiences in teaching and tutoring. These experiences roughly fall into two major areas- the sciences, and the humanities. In the sciences, I've worked with both peers and younger students in a number of biomedical fields, and I also have experience preparing students for standardized tests like the MCAT. At Rice University, I also worked as a teaching assistant in Cell Biology, where I lectured at review sessions, assisted students individually with their questions, and even wrote some exam material. This experience was great practice in taking even the most arcane subject matter and condensing it into a format understandable by my peers, something that I think contributes to my effectiveness as a tutor. I also try to incorporate my research experience at institutions like the NIH into my tutoring in these areas, using real-world examples from cutting-edge research and scientific communication skills gleaned from poster sessions and academic publications to supplement the teaching experience.Outside the sciences, I also have two years of experience working with a student individually in the humanities. I started with this student in 8th grade; he had no opportunity for formal education in the Classics at his school, but was interested in learning about the ancient civilizations of Greece and Rome. I developed tailored lessons plans for him, helping to teach him Greco-Roman mythology, Roman history, and Latin translation skills, and planning additional challenge assignments drawn from my Classics major and thesis in comparative mythology. To further supplement his education, I also worked with him to prepare for a number of contests in the Classics; within a year of starting this experience, I helped him progress to the point that he was winning regional contests through the National Junior Classical League, and medaling in national written exams such as the Medusa Mythology Exam.Whether in the sciences or humanities, my students benefit from my unique blend of experience. My varied education, with degrees in both Biochemistry and Classical Studies and advanced study in a number of fields in between, gives me the flexibility to adapt to each student and the power to supplement a student's education with perspectives from other fields. My experience in leadership development, as president of my residential college, also allows me to guide students not only as academics, but also as career- and goal-oriented individuals. Finally, my passion, intrapersonal skills, and experience with academic communication help me find the right method of teaching to get each student motivated and thriving in their fields. I look forward to forming new mentoring relationships with my students through Varsity Tutors, and can't wait to help get them on the road to success.

I am a recent graduate of Rice University, with a Bachelor of Arts in Kinesiology and a Minor in Biochemistry and Cell Biology. My strengths as a tutor would most likely be my friendliness and enthusiasm, as well as my genuine desire to help students master the material.
