My tutoring career formally began six years ago--since then, I have been gradually developing my own personalized collection of tips and tools for effective learning in a large range of disciplines.My journey began in high school as a tutor for a handful of middle school students struggling with mathematics. The private sessions instilled within me an appreciation for the power of conceptual connections. I found that each individual student's network of knowledge was vastly different, and so the connections they drew in order to arrive at solutions differed as well. It became my goal and pleasure to guide these students along their own intellectual pathways towards a better understanding.During my undergraduate career at the University of Texas at Dallas, I continued to fortify this skill. Through these programs, I was introduced to new methods for helping students attain their own understanding of course materials with only minimal guidance from myself. These methods relied upon the fact that, oftentimes, students already possess the foundational knowledge to arrive at correct conclusions--they simply lack the confidence and/or the roadmaps to get there. That's where I come in.After finishing my B.S. in Mechanical Engineering last May, I moved back to the Raleigh-Durham area to continue my education at Duke University for an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering. I graduated this Spring from Duke University and I'm in the process of applying to Master's programs for marine biology. I am a rising senior at Duke University who is Pre Med and majoring in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies. I was born and raised in Miami FL and went to public school until college (Sunset Elementary, GW Carver Middle and Coral Reef Senior High for those from Miami). I decided to start tutoring because I would not be on this path had I not had good teachers supporting me along the way. I have been very fortunate when it comes to learning because I have always found it enjoyable. Not just academic learning but new experiences in general. Growing up I loved school, but it was not until I got to college that I realized how truly lucky I had been in my previous years to have had my dad as my personal tutor. Any time I had a question he was able to help me. I had taken his presence for granted and it was not until I was in college that I realized how good I had it back home. When I got to college I was of the mindset that I knew how to study and that school was the one thing that I did well. It was a severe wake-up call after my first organic chemistry midterm to realize that I needed help studying. My study techniques were not working for me anymore. I sought out my school's tutoring service and it was the single best decision I made during my academic career. Learning from my peers was very eye opening. I realized that we do not all learn the same way and I found that the way in which my professor would explain a concept was not always how it made sense to me. This did not mean I was not going to understand it just meant I needed to find a new perspective. All it would take was a different analogy or a different example problem for said concept to click with me. It was then that I realized that I wanted to be the person that helped someone else understand. I wanted to be someone's resource so that they could continue to pursue their academic goals with the best outcome possible because learning does not follow a strict formula, it is not linear, and I think that schools do not always do a good job of translating that to students.I think I will be a great tutor because I have been on both sides of the coin. I know what it takes to be a good tutor and have had success with my students in the past. I have learned that teaching effectively only happens when the instructor takes the time to learn how the tutee learns, whether it be visually or by hearing it said to them or even by writing it down. All of which are valid forms of understanding and processing information, but are not always the way that the material is taught in class. Tutoring gives me the opportunity to personalize the teaching so that it fits the individual's needs leading to more efficient and effective learning. I plan to develop my student's entire approach to problem solving. This way what they learn has multiple applications and is not subject specific. I will construct a personalized algorithm that they can apply to studying as well as daily homework problems. I believe that effective learning can be taught and developed and with hard work and discipline it can become second nature.

Hi there! My name is Evan and I'm a rising senior at Duke University. At Duke, I designed my own major called "Documenting Justice: The Role of Photographic Narratives in Activism." I'm passionate about documentary photography and social movements, and my degree program gives me the wonderful opportunity to study both! Although my course of studies is pretty social sciences/humanities based, I absolutely LOVE math! I was a huge math geek in high school and I love any opportunity I get to spread that enthusiasm for math to other students.Outside of my academic interests, I love playing music and writing new songs for my guitar, ukulele, and harmonica. I'm also a Netflix aficionado and may or may not have binge-watched all nine seasons of The Office multiple times.I'm passionate about ensuring that all students reach their full potential. I love to learn and to help others learn, a pleasure I had for nearly forty years as a college instructor in writing and literature at The College of Wooster in Ohio. Although I taught many classes in these subjects, much of my teaching was done in one-on-one conferences on how to write for a variety of purposes: explanations, arguments, analyses, research, poetry and fiction. I worked with writers from those having basic difficulties to sophisticated seniors working on complex research papers or creative collections of stories and poems.My primary approach is first to try to understand you as a learner, to identify not just problems but also how you work best with a particular style, and to devise a way of learning that fits both you and the form of writing to be developed. Although a writer needs to understand the "rules," such as grammar, the goal is to discover how you can learn to use both the rules and your knowledge and creativity for your own purposes.In literature, my tutoring begins with an emphasis on comprehending the text, identifying patterns and themes, and finally coming to an analysis or interpretation that arises from this understanding and makes sense of as many aspects as possible. Literary interpretation is not a mysterious game, iibut a skill that can be learned and practiced by you with excellent results.In tutoring for tests, such as the GRE or SAT, my approach focuses on understanding the kinds of thinking the tests want to identify, the ways in which the questions try to identify them, and the best strategies for answering the kinds of questions asked. Importantly too, I help the you to recognize your past experiences with these questions--perhaps in other forms--as an important way of easing anxiety about the tests.I am a patient, understanding and experienced tutor, mentor and teacher. My basic belief is that people learn best from encouragement and practice that brings insight, and never from ridicule or harshness.
