I am passionate about guiding individuals to meet their goals and highest potential through individualized support, empathy, and caring collaboration. Don't let fear or nerves prevent you from taking a big step toward accelerating your progress. I will work to support your progress if you're ready to champion yourself here and now. When we meet, we'll earn about each other, work together to establish your learning goals, and map out a path to achieve them. I am proud to have a lifelong love of learning, and through my work I aim to guide and instruct others along their own process of education. As an undergraduate student at Yale University, I took a wide range of courses alongside the requirements for my degree program in Music. I also made sure to keep time free to sing in a cappella groups and to play my cello. After college, I had my first experience teaching music, math, and language skills to students at an international school in Italy. This opportunity opened my eyes to the wonderful rewards of tutoring and teaching, and I have not looked back since!Since returning to the United States, I have offered private tutoring focused on test preparation, worked to coordinate music education outreach projects with a non-profit organization, and worked as the director of several musical ensembles. I completed my masters degree in Choral Conducting at the University of Michigan and am currently back at Yale, where I am a doctoral student in conducting.I love working with students to help them to achieve their potential. I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have had wonderful teachers throughout my life, and I aim to support and encourage my students in the same way!

It is my belief that what makes a great teacher is the ability to listen and fully take in where a particular student is coming from. We don't ask enough questions of our students. Each of us is so very unique, with a specific way in which we learn and take in information. We must ask questions in order to find out where a student is coming from and how they view their own challenges, so that we can truly impart information that will help that specific student become a better learner. My job is to not only help the student overcome specific content hurdles, but to also help them become a better learner overall. That is my global view on our responsibility as educators. The teachers that impacted me the most where the ones that engaged my creativity while challenging me to go further and bolstering my belief in myself. Therefore, it is my responsibility to carefully observe and take in what an individual students challenges or blocks may be, and tailor my tutoring specifically to target those challenges, while reinforcing what the student already does well. My ability to use my instincts and my observational listening skills to uncover a students potential challenges, coupled with my natural teaching ability and my verbal communication skills make me a very effective tutor. My students will feel challenged and confident in their ability and this will produce major educational growth and quantifiable results.

I'm a PhD candidate at Yale University, where I've spent the past five years teaching writing-intensive courses in religious studies, classics, and the humanities more broadly. I have an MPhil and an MA from Yale, and a BA in Classics from The University of Chicago. As a teaching fellow and writing tutor, I've worked directly with undergraduate and graduate students to strengthen their analysis of literature, their research skills, and their analytical and expository writing. My academic work focuses on the history and culture of the ancient Mediterranean world circa 300-600 CE. I specialize in English and writing at all levels: analytical essays, research papers, thesis development, essay organization, literary analysis, and college application essays. I also tutor AP English Language and Literature, SAT Reading and Writing, History & Classics, and am good at working with younger students on reading comprehension and fluency (I volunteer with an afterschool reading program in New Haven). I have taught ESL to adults through a night school program, and I can help with writing, reading, and conversation practice if you're learning English as a second language. If you're learning Latin, ancient Greek, or Coptic, I can help with that tooI work with these languages professionally, in my academic work. When I'm tutoring, I don't just mark up your existing writing. Instead, I ask questions that help you figure out what's working and what isn't. I believe that real improvement happens when students learn to ask themselves, "Wait, what am I actually trying to argue here?" and "Does this evidence really prove my point?" I'm especially good at helping students read texts closely and with interest, develop strong, well-supported arguments, and articulate complex, well-organized ideas. I have been teaching online since the pandemic, and I am completely comfortable with virtual tutoring. I have a flexible schedule, and can work with students in the evenings and on weekends as needed.

My love of biology goes back to my youth spent outside, exploring nature, and inside, reading books on dinosaurs. My undergraduate (Morehouse College) major was biology; my minor, mathematics. My master's (Yale University) was in biology. My master's and doctorate (University of Florida and Princeton University) was in religious studies. I've taught biology, especially genetics and evolutionary biology, as well as theology, religion, spirituality, and the interaction between science and religion. I've taught as a professor in classroom settings at colleges and universities, as well as in one-on-one tutoring. I can tutor students in biology (biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, genetics, physiology, microbiology, botany, zoology, population biology, and ecology); in various mathematical subjects, such as pre-algebra, algebra 1 (e.g., linear equations), geometry, algebra 2 (e.g., quadratic equations), and pre-calculus; and in religion and philosophy. I believe tutoring goes beyond merely helping with homework, or reviewing material from class. Tutoring should help the student become a critical thinker, one who is able to learn independently and think independently. I believe it's important to aid the student in discovering how the subject is relevant to everyday life. As a tutor, my aim is to create new and effective ways of inspiring students to view learning as an exciting adventure.

I received my BA cum laude in American Studies from Yale University in 2013, and worked for the past two years as the Exhibit Content and Media Coordinator at the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate. My experiences have given me insight into the best methods for teaching students in an exciting and engaging way, and I am excited to put these skills to work.I love working with students to perfect their essays, digging into the fundamentals of good writing to make sure we build lasting writing skills. My passion for history and writing, my skills as an editor and writer, and my comfort working with students of all ages make me a great fit for anyone seeking tutoring in history, literature, writing, and essay editing, or standardized test prep in those areas! My specialties are in writing, editing, history, and literature. As an American Studies major at Yale, I developed excellent analytical and creative writing skills. My senior thesis in American Studies examined the visual language of race and power in Korean war photography. Outside the classroom, I served as editor-in-chief of The Bullblog, Yale???s daily campus blog. I also served as a teacher in the Hillel Children???s School, a Jewish learning program for students aged K-8. In my role as classroom teacher, I was in charge of lesson planning, classroom management, and teaching Hebrew and Judaic studies to classes of middle school students. An important part of the mission at Varsity Tutors is working with students to engage them in learning. Similarly, my job at the EMK Institute was to frame public policy in a way that inspired people to become more civically engaged. As the Institute???s Exhibit Content and Media Coordinator, I was a hands-on developer of the Institute???s Senate Immersion Module program, in which students craft mock legislation in a full-scale replica of the Senate chamber. I worked alongside teachers to design educational programs, lesson plans, and curriculum that effectively communicated content to students and teachers. I also worked directly with middle and high school students, teaching them historical lessons and engaging them in debates on historical topics related to the United States Senate. I also honed my communication and classroom skills by training the first class of volunteer docents for the museum. It was my job to produce the 100-page training manual and to teach all of the historical content to the new tour guides. My experience at the EMK Institute gave me experience in a cutting-edge educational setting and prepared me for tutoring, particularly for middle and high school students. Please contact me with any further questions!

Eager for tutoring opportunities, I welcome any of you who wishes to undergo SAT/PSAT or ACT Test Preparation that will get you the scores you need for admission to the college of your choice. As for my experience, I have tutoring experience in both one-to-one settings, going as far back as high school, and group/classroom settings, especially from my 4 years of tutoring with Yale MATHCOUNTS. As a likely future graduate student myself, it is my general goal in life to continue the tradition of passing forth knowledge. Not surprisingly, I have always considered tutoring and education among the most noble of professions where both parties, student and teacher, benefit and learn. What makes me an excellent tutor? Over the course of my life I have had the good fortune of cultivating a variety and number of skill sets, some of which are academic and social in nature. While I certainly consider academic prowess important for the success of any instructor, I would say the most important skill set I have developed is that of adaptability. If a tutor can adapt him/herself to the mode and manner of thinking of another, the tutor, as well as the tutor's audience, will have especially effective and enriching transactions.

I also speak German, having learned it as a high school exchange student, majored in it in college, and having spent a summer working in a Berlin law office. As much as I love the law--and I really do!--I also love teaching. I recently spent a semester teaching as an Adjunct Professor of Law at a law school; that experience confirmed for me that teaching is what I was meant to do. I have had numerous other teaching and tutoring experiences, including working for my university's tutoring service as an undergraduate student and later working for my law school as a tutor.

I am passionate about helping secondary and post-secondary students to read texts carefully, to make arguments cogently, and to tell a story about themselves, the world around them, and the things that are important in their lives. I believe that the humanities really do help us be more human with each other and in our world. I teach and tutor with the assumption that school is a set of practices that anyone can learn and that, when they engage those practices diligently, students gain empathy and critical thinking skills that are transferable to all of their endeavors.
