I have taught for over 30 years at the high school level and now the community college level. In those years, I have learned a lot about student learning. Obviously, not every student learns the same way. I try to present topics from different points of view with different methods of solving them whenever possible. I want math to be as painless as possible for students. Since I have taught for so long, I can anticipate some of the difficulties that students are going to have and work to avoid them. I look forward to meeting new students and helping them be more successful in math.

Both of these are not only entertaining, but timeless and worth reading and rereading. Both speak to the importance of making every word count. Becoming a strong editor of your own work is something I will teach you!Outside of work and tutoring, I sing in a couple of groups and play jazz piano. I also love art - all kinds, particularly public art. I love the murals and sculpture that are part of the landscape of Chicago, where I live. I've always had the drive to serve others because of the intrinsic gratification it gave me. I know becoming a physician would permit me to work and serve others in a way no other career would allow. I wanted to instill joy in patients by uplifting their quality of life. I hadn't considered otolaryngology until I was given the opportunity to observe in the pediatric otolaryngology clinic. I was instantly sold as I observed a 5 year old patient in clinic getting hearing aids for the first time. The mother broke into tears, happy that her child could simply appreciate her voice. I was astonished. I'd never considered a world in-which I couldn't experience my mother's laughter. This resonated with me, knowing I would be honored to impact someone's life in such a way. This was the first of many unique experiences that I valued in the otolaryngology department. I was inspired watching surgeries that ranged from eustachian tube placement to retrieving an apple piece from the bronchus of an 11 month old. From this, I knew the specialty that best captured my passion for medicine and restoring the quality of life for patients. Working hard to strengthen my candidacy for medical school, I attended a post-baccalaureate program to strengthened my scientific foundation. This program helped me address academic areas that needed improvement and helped me formulate a method of accomplishing just that. I consider my resiliency as a measurement of how passionate I am about becoming a physician. I often challenged myself by asking "If my patient asks me this molecular biology question, how hard would I work to solve it?" which motivated me to fight through my academic setbacks. I learned that in medicine I have to let my desire for helping others motivate me through these challenges. I attained my degree in Cell and Molecular Biology at Missouri State University, where I graduated in December of 2014. Along with this degree, I acquired minors in Chemistry and Business. I am currently enrolled at the University of Missouri-Kansas City as a dental student. I will be graduating with my Doctor of Dental Surgery in May of 2019. While attending Missouri State, I worked in our tutoring center as a science tutor for several years. The majority of students that came for assistance were working with general chemistry. I frequently helped with other courses, such as Anatomy and Physiology, Organic Chemistry, Biology, and Genetics. These classes also get you to think deeper than a surface level or just the memorization of facts, which I believe is what learning actually is. Math is also one of my favorite classes to tutor because I have a very solid understanding of it. Similar to Anatomy and Physiology, math uses a lot of logic, which allows you to understand and learn concepts that will stick with you rather than learning them for a test and then discarding this information.I would like to describe my teaching philosophy as a means of challenging students. It is essential to initially evaluate what information the student knows and what they are struggling with. This enables me to encourage the student and compliment them on what they know, while still targeting the other areas they are not as comfortable with at the same time. Once I know the concepts a student is comfortable with, I can expand from these so students can understand more complex concepts holistically rather than as different segments. I like to challenge students by questioning them as we work through a problem. By challenging students to work through a problem based on their knowledge, it allows them to see possible flaws with their logic so they will not make the same mistake in the future. This also enhances their understanding of a concept because they are seeing where the mistake was rather than me simply pointing it out to them.Outside of academia, I am interested in a variety of things. As I briefly mentioned, I was in a fraternity at Missouri State. I enjoy being very social and networking with a lot of people. I was also in an organization called University Ambassadors in college. With this organization, I served as the public relations team for the university by coordinating and giving tours to prospective students and their families. I am also interested in sports. In high school, I played basketball, baseball, and soccer.
