I am a Senior at the University of Colorado Denver, majoring in History and Teacher Education in Social Studies at the Secondary level (Middle and High School). I expect to complete my Bachelor's program in Spring 2016, and anticipate receiving my Colorado Teaching Certification in Spring 2017. Although I have not yet ruled out Graduate School, I currently intend to teach High School History upon completing my certification.Though most of my tutoring experience has been with Undergraduates at the collegiate level, I have on occasion worked with younger students. I tend to encounter the same difficulties with all History students, regardless of their age or grade. They tell me that History is boring, and they don't consider it relevant to their lives. My goal is to change that perception by finding parallels between the subject matter and the modern world. History is so much more than a list of names and dates to be memorized. In order to truly understand the modern world one must be aware of how it came to be. If I can connect historical events to issues and ideas that matter to the student they will be much more receptive to the material.

Hello! My name is Kirsten and I am so excited to connect with you and your family. I am primarily an early elementary teacher specializing in pre-K to 3rd grade. I teach all subject areas but get the most excited to teach the science of reading and skills of writing! I am currently getting my Master's in Early Childhood Education from the University of Colorado at Denver and have experience in 1:1 tutoring as well as small group settings. I have also taught in mixed grade classrooms, with small class sizes focused on individualized instruction. I hold prior experience in virtual tutoring as well as in person.When I am not teaching I am often at home snuggling my cat Pickles while reading, puzzling, or trying out a new craft or passion project. I am a graduate of the University of Virginia and the University of Colorado. I received my Bachelor of Science in Systems Engineering and my Masters Degree in Computer Science. I have been teaching for over 30 years. I started teaching when I was living overseas with my husband and teaching was one of the few jobs available. I found out that I love teaching, so I continued teaching when we returned to the United States first at the community college level but then at the middle and high school level as I followed my children's progress through school. As a military family we moved 16 times, so I have traveled extensively. Although I have taught a variety of subjects, my passion is computer science. I love working with students, and I feel a great sense of accomplishment when they master new material. I believe living is learning, and I care deeply that my students are successful. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, walking, and spoiling our cat.

I hold an MFA in Creative Writing from CSU Fresno and a Bachelor's in English from CU Denver. I've been teaching on the college level for nearly four years, and I also work as a tutor in the Writing Center at College of the Sequoias. Throughout 2012-2013, I led writing activities for incarcerated youth in the Fresno Juvenile Justice Center. I firmly believe that, with enough practice and hard work, every student has the potential to read and write well. I tutor multiple subjects connected to English - essay editing, grammar and mechanics, writing, and ESL. I write in my free time, so I love imparting students with an appreciation of reading and writing. I also play drums in two different metal bands, and I love to ride my fixie around town.

I've been teaching and coaching math and robotics for more than 10 years, in conjunction with over 20 years of programming and software QA. I love helping people find new ways of looking at problems to reveal solutions. My aptitude for math, programming and robotics stems from my true passion for music, especially music theory. Throughout college and my two years as a math teacher, I found that there isn't one best teaching method. Instead, each student is unique and this reflects in their learning style. A good teacher will be able to change strategies to accommodate for differences in learning styles. I hope to be the best teacher that I can be by listening to my students and adjust my style of teaching to fit the student's needs.

I previously worked as a credit recovery online teacher in Denver, CO, and San Diego, CA. I recently moved to Portland with my husband and am hoping to return to teaching once the pandemic is over next year. I am UC Irvine graduate with a B.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences. I am currently working towards earning my M.D. at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.
