I am currently in Graduate School completing a dual degree MD/PhD program in Neuroscience at SUNY Downstate Medical Center. I am a graduate of the Brooklyn College BA-MD program, a program that guides students directly into medical school at SUNY Downstate. I have taught Biology, Chemistry, and Physics at various levels ranging from high school to college and graduate levels, and currently teach numerous classes in my medical school. I have succeeded academically due to my personal philosophy on education: I value complete understanding of material above all else. I am a continuous learner and I strive to teach that to my students. Once a subject is truly understood, tests will be easy, and great grades will follow. With this mindset, I have become talented at understanding where a student's problems with subject matter lie, mainly because I have probably experienced the same issues when I started learning these subjects. Now, I feel confident in passing on my knowledge to other people, and I feel that my last seven years of teaching demonstrate my ability to do so.

I have an honors BA with a focus on studio art from Macaulay Honors College at Brooklyn College. After graduating, I took on a role as label manager at an independent record label in Brooklyn, traveled across the world to New Zealand to run a gallery and curate art shows, and eventually made it back to residing in New York City. I currently work in the music industry and am a practicing artist. Throughout my years at school, I tutored my peers and some younger students in English and writing subjects, and continued it on the side while I pursued my other career interests as well.I am passionate about inspiring the students I tutor to take on their own interest in learning, reading, and writing in a way that suits and stimulates them. Each student has unique tastes, interests, and styles of learning, and this is a central concept to my teaching approach. I work with each student to find out their individual strengths and weaknesses, while helping them recognize what tools and resources they can use to help them on their academic journey.I tutor in reading comprehension, writing, essay writing and editing, and SAT reading and writing as well as AP English subjects. I am a strong proponent for encouraging and inspiring students to seek out learning opportunities on their own outside of school, and to find enjoyment in their studies and academic pursuits.

In my opinion, the role of a teacher goes beyond educating the students. The different roles teachers have prepare students for life and the career they choose. I believe my role as a teacher is to be the manager, the planner, observer, rapport builder, observer of signs of trouble, build a warm environment, and be a positive role model.

My passion for math and reading started at a very young age, but I quickly understood these subjects aren't fun for everyone. I started tutoring my peers in elementary school, and went on to organize formal peer tutoring groups in middle and high school, to help bridge gaps between teachers' expectations and my peers' reality.I've used my lifelong passion for math and problem solving to obtain my Master's degree in Computer Science, but I know that without a solid background in math and reading, my advanced degree would have been difficult to achieve.I prefer students to understand, from their unique point of view, why 1+1=2, why x*y=z or why "knock" only has one 'k' sound. Kids have a lot going on in their academic and personal lives, so I take time to talk to my students, take a few steps back from the problem and understand how they're tackling the problem. I've found that this conversation facilitates my understanding of how the student learns, and lends to their deeper understanding of concepts to apply to future, independent problem solving.

For some learning can be a difficult process. Not because they lack any type of mental facility, but because the material may not have been presented to them properly or more likely the case, the fundamentals needed to grasp the material are weak. I find that the lack of fundamentals is the key reasons people struggle grasping a subject matter, specifically in math and sciences.I hope to help a student learn the basis for their struggles and introduce them to how to learn more than what to learn. Understanding one's own weakness is key to learning. I hope to help the student be more introspective. Instead of saying "This is too hard", I want them to ask "Why is this too hard, and how can I fix my shortcoming?".

I hold a BA from UMass Amherst in Political Economy and MS from Brooklyn College in Mathematics Education, both summa cum laude. I am currently attending NYU Wagner, working on my Masters in Public Administration with a concentration in Education Policy.I have been a NYC DOE math teacher for the past four years, three years as a 6th- 8th grade math teacher and my last year teaching Algebra, Geometry/Trig and Health. I have taught classes ranging from advance placement to remedial, including CCT and ESL. I absolutely believe that every student can succeed in math. My approach to teaching/tutoring is building confidence through math. Often times, I have students who say they "don't get it." However, I show them they may not get the whole picture yet, but they do have an understanding of some. And by showing them tangible steps they can use time and again, students see they can "get it". Those "ah-ha" moments are not only building blocks in their skills, but more importantly, reinforcing who they are and their abilities. For my students who already have confidence in their math ability, it is about pushing them to the next level. Math is about problem solving, puzzles and thinking outside the box. By presenting problems within their skillset but slightly beyond their experience, it allows for the imaginary side of math to emerge while preparing them to approach a new problem with confidence. As the Math Department Head of my school, I have an intricate understanding of math standards for 6th- 12th grade, as well as the new Common Core Standards being piloted through NYC this year. This knowledge paired with my classroom understanding has been key to not only preparing my students for their current grade but really hone in what knowledge they will really need for the next sequential math classes. Recognized as a DOE Honors Teacher, I have prepared students for various standardized test, Regents, AP and SATs with great results. Grading the DOE math exams for 3-8th grade, Algebra and Math A/B Regents has given me the knowledge as to what the state looks for as well.Math has always been my favorite subject. It pains me when a student says they hate math because it usually means they encountered a past teacher who cared more about "the right answer" then the multiple approaches to understanding the answer.
