I am currently a graduate student at the CUNY Graduate Center - Brooklyn College where I am studying for my Masters in Business degree. I completed my undergraduate studies from Brooklyn College and received my Bachelor's in Business Administration while completing my premedical requisites. I plan to take the MCAT and apply for medical school soon. In the future, I hope to be a pediatrician because I want to be a doctor and I love working with children. I currently reside in Brooklyn. My family consists of my parents and two younger sisters. I came from Bangladesh to the United States when I was three and a half years old with my mother and sister. I grew up with strong educational values to always put my studies first. I hold fast to my values since the better educated you are, the more opportunities open up for you. My father started teaching me Algebra when I was in the fourth grade and since I was always good at it, math has been my favorite subject. From this experience I know that when math subjects are explained properly, it can be a simple concept that everyone can understand.

I have been teaching for over thirty-five years and have enjoyed every moment. To me, education is not just about learning facts and passing exams, it is also about becoming a life-long learner. It is about using knowledge to improve one's life both personally and professionally. There are skills which need to be mastered and this is one important element of education. I also believe that education can improve one's enjoyment of life regardless of the occupation or field of study one pursues.I am especially proficient in the areas of essay writing and editing, proofreading, and the mechanics of grammar and usage. I have extensive experience in helping students prepare for standardized tests such as the SAT. I have also taught AP English and I am very familiar with the requirements of the AP Exam.

My passion for math and reading started at a very young age, but I quickly understood these subjects aren't fun for everyone. I started tutoring my peers in elementary school, and went on to organize formal peer tutoring groups in middle and high school, to help bridge gaps between teachers' expectations and my peers' reality.I've used my lifelong passion for math and problem solving to obtain my Master's degree in Computer Science, but I know that without a solid background in math and reading, my advanced degree would have been difficult to achieve.I prefer students to understand, from their unique point of view, why 1+1=2, why x*y=z or why "knock" only has one 'k' sound. Kids have a lot going on in their academic and personal lives, so I take time to talk to my students, take a few steps back from the problem and understand how they're tackling the problem. I've found that this conversation facilitates my understanding of how the student learns, and lends to their deeper understanding of concepts to apply to future, independent problem solving.

I am a public health enthusiast and a medical student. I earned my Bachelor's in Biology and a minor in Anthropology from Brooklyn College. I have a Master's in Public Health with a concentration in Health Behaviors and Policy, from St. George's University in Grenada, West Indies. Grenada is where I developed my love for Public Health. I did grassroots work in Community Health and Needs Assessment and worked with Grenadian authorities in order to improve health behaviors in the Grand Anse Valley community in Grenada.Throughout my academics, I have always had a passion to teach. During my undergrad years I worked with Pre-K children through Americorps' Jumpstart program. I learned how to communicate with children who were between the ages of 3 and 5 years and came to a better understanding of how children learn from their environment. After my graduation, I taught 8th graders who were being home-schooled. I absolutely loved to create a bit of excitement in learning science and math. And, during med school, I tutored my peers and younger colleagues to tackle subjects like Anatomy and Physiology. I wanted to make their path through med school a little bit easier and less stressful. My approach to tutoring is that of understanding subjects, rather than rushing to the answer. I have always believed that the confidence students have in themselves plays a big role in learning, whereas fear and anxiety are a hindrance to learning and memory. This is a key player when it comes to exams as well. My main goal is always to help the student to learn how to maneuver through problems and obstacles even if they haven't come across them before. This always helps them to become confident in themselves and to not let challenges bring them down.

I am currently in Graduate School completing a dual degree MD/PhD program in Neuroscience at SUNY Downstate Medical Center. I am a graduate of the Brooklyn College BA-MD program, a program that guides students directly into medical school at SUNY Downstate. I have taught Biology, Chemistry, and Physics at various levels ranging from high school to college and graduate levels, and currently teach numerous classes in my medical school. I have succeeded academically due to my personal philosophy on education: I value complete understanding of material above all else. I am a continuous learner and I strive to teach that to my students. Once a subject is truly understood, tests will be easy, and great grades will follow. With this mindset, I have become talented at understanding where a student's problems with subject matter lie, mainly because I have probably experienced the same issues when I started learning these subjects. Now, I feel confident in passing on my knowledge to other people, and I feel that my last seven years of teaching demonstrate my ability to do so.

My favorite part about teaching and tutoring is helping students get excited about a new idea or creative process. In my tutoring sessions, I will focus on both big ideas (developing and structuring arguments, analyzing themes, building connections, etc.) and the nitty gritty details (conventions, grammar, sentence structure, style, voice, etc.) of reading and writing, whether it be for an essay prompt on an assigned novel or for SAT prep. By the end of a session, you'll be better equipped with skills that will help you not just with your current assignment but also with any reading or writing assignment in the future. In my spare time, when I'm not reading all the books I can get my hands on, I enjoy playing piano and singing.

As a child I developed a love for reading that has lasted throughout my adult life. I enjoy helping students acquire strong literacy skills and instilling in them a similar love of reading. I received my Bachelor's degree from Brooklyn College with a major in Television Production and a minor in English. It was my study in English literature that eventually led me into teaching. I have taught in both preschool and public school. As a teacher it was my responsibility to help students learn and expand their literacy skills such as; letter recognition, phonics, grammar and vocabulary. Since reading and writing are so closely connected I also enjoy helping students to express their ideas and opinions on paper. I have taught both general and special education students; so I am familiar with writing and maintaining IEP goals. I think learning should be interactive and interesting, therefore I try to use music and games whenever appropriate. When I begin working with a student; I assess their current skills so that I can build on what they already know and help them to achieve their academic goals.I believe that all children can learn given the right tools and support.

I attended Brooklyn College for grad school, earning a Master's degree in English Literature. This followed my previous studies at Brunel University in London, which culminated in a Postgraduate Certificate in Contemporary Literature and Culture. I have a Bachelor's degree in Sociology from the University of York in the U.K. and an International Baccalaureate diploma from the Munich International School. My international education in Germany, Britain, and the United States has prepared me for the exciting challenges and rewards of sharing my bilingual English/German expertise through teaching and tutoring.I spent two years teaching German in grades 1 5 at the Munich International School. I'm familiar with the philosophies and demands of the IB program, from the students' as well as the teachers' perspective. In addition, I've taught English as a Second Language at an academic summer camp for teenagers in Germany. Currently, I organize and lead a creative writing group for adults with my husband at our home in Brooklyn. Over the course of my professional and academic trajectory, tutoring has supplemented and enriched my experience.Whether helping a fourth grader with intermediate-level German homework or guiding a high school senior in writing an analytical essay on Flannery O'Connor's short stories, I relish the chance to delve into the given subject matter and inspire enthusiasm and success. My passion is rooted in though not exclusive to languages, literature, and writing. I tutor all levels of English and German, with a preference for literary and creative genres. One-on-one tutoring presents my ideal teaching scenario: it allows me to provide my undivided attention, to tailor my approach to the student's needs, and to become a supportive and compassionate mentor all around. I strive to engage my student through a dynamic and friendly approach, and to make learning effective and fun.Besides reading and writing, I love live music shows, movies, making photo projects, skiing, the ocean, the night, ice cream, dogs, good company, long conversations, and traveling.

I am currently a senior at CUNY Brooklyn College working towards a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a minor in Children and Youth Studies. I work in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis with children who have an Autism Spectrum Disorder. I have experience tutoring students in elementary and middle school in a variety of subjects, but the subjects I have worked with most are English, Writing, and Math. I have worked as an after school counselor where a portion of each day was dedicated to assisting students with homework and often leading the class in completing assignments and problems that presented challenges. My favorite subject to tutor is Math because I struggled with Math from elementary school through High School. If it were not for tutoring, I would not have been able to grasp certain concepts on my own; a part of my philosophy in tutoring and in life is to use my experiences with challenges and learning to help other people reach a goal; for instance, using techniques I learned receiving math tutoring to help a student struggling in the same area. I believe it is important for students to understand their capability to solve a problem – my tutoring style involves an interactive approach in which I work from the bottom up with students, allowing them to express what they do understand first, before tackling that which might be confusing; I believe the confidence in knowing what you can do is important when learning to accomplish what you think you can’t do. A few of my interests outside of tutoring and working with children are playing my bass guitar, dancing, stepping, and playing with my dog! I am a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and also enjoy putting on programs and participating in community service with my chapter.

I migrated from Peru to America in the 80’s not knowing any English and realized the importance of being bilingual. After taking English classes and a lot of self study, I learned enough of the language to enroll in college. I got my bachelor and master’s degree in Spanish at Brooklyn College and tutoring my fellow classmates helped me pay for my tuition. Since then, I worked as a part time Spanish substitute teacher and was promoted to a full time teacher in public schools in Brooklyn. In 2013 my hard work paid off when my students got a 100 percent pass rate in their Spanish Lote Exam (the new name for Regents in Foreign Language). While I was teaching, I continued to tutor students who needed help in Spanish of all ages and grades. I have a particular student of Russian decent who I’ve been tutoring since she was in Junior High. When she went to high school, she took Spanish as her language of choice. Her teacher even thought she was Spanish because she spoke the language very well. At the present moment, I am still tutoring her in Spanish but this time, her lessons are more conversational. Due to my struggles as an immigrant, I tell all my students that it’s very important to go to college and get their education because it is something that no one can take away form you. It’s their ticket to their freedom and independence. In my spare time I practice yoga, spend time with my daughters and read books.

Everyone learns in different ways and that's the key point in teaching students. Conventional ways may work for some but not all students. Being able to deliver material in relatable ways is what I'm all about. Sometimes all students need is a simple explanation, that's not straight out of a text book; so if that's the kind of tutoring you're looking for I'm your guy!
