I believe effective instruction starts with students. Students are more likely to succeed if they believe they are valuable as individuals. All students should be valued. All students who are able should have a say in how they are taught. When these practices are established and reinforced, the individual student becomes intrinsically motivated to be productive. Only then will we see our children blossom into lifelong learners and productive citizens.I believe in the ability for all to learn and learning provides empowerment of the individual. If empowerment is not established and reinforced, even the most resilient student will be likely to fail to meet their potential and therefore fall into cycles of self defeat. It is our job as teachers to create learning environments to foster and provide opportunities for exposure to these truths.I think keeping an open mind to change and a sense of humor are also very important aspects of education. Character education that emphasizes tolerance and support will surely give our students valuable life skills. The heart is where great teaching comes from. Im currently a senior healthcare administration major at Arcadia University and I am pursuing a doctorate of dental surgery. My educational career has had its many vicissitudes but I have now zeroed in on my goal of getting into dental school. I graduated from high school the spring of 2012 with a 3.9 GPA; my favorite course was AP English. Since I was little up until now at twenty-two I have been was a voracious reader and was always exploring different forms of Literature. One of the many solidifying experiences in my four years of high school was being a part of Future Teachers, which is a program where I visited the local middle school with two other students to assist middle school students with English and their other academic pursuits. Working with students and going from the progression of not understanding a concept to the enlightenment of realizing oh wow that was easy! This is the reason why I want to be a part of the Varsity Tutors platform and help students.Along with this I have always harbored a need to want to help people. The idea that someone can be lagging behind in their studies and my actions or interventions can wholly rectify or improve that condition is an amazing thing. Now I would like to give three reasons why I am pursuing healthcare to edify why helping others is so crucial to me. First, is that my mom is a nurse at UPENN Hospital and day in day out works to help people, nurture and improve their overall health quality. This compassion to help others I feel was passed to me because of my mom. Second, I have a vested interest in healthcare and helping others in general because my family on my mothers side has a history of diabetes, which has had some disastrous effects. In this age driven by state assessments, students are encouraged to find what???s considered to be the correct answer quickly with little room for exploration or a deeper level of critical thinking. Students are often encouraged to get from point A to point B in a quick and efficient manner without stopping to discover along the way. Although students achieve their goal of completing an assignment in a timely manner, the writing that results lacks originality of thought that can only be discovered through exploration.As an adjunct, I stress the importance of exploration for the good of my students??? creative and academic endeavors. These efforts make both of us not only better students, but help to ensure that we can increase of knowledge in all areas of our lives no matter what path they may take. I believe that teachers who demonstrate curiosity and passion about a subject area motivate students to learn. I believe that W.B. While attending Arcadia University, I conducted research in a Genetics lab where I helped investigate the role of specific insulator DNA sequences in the Drosophila genome that bound to a protein called CTCF. Afterwards, while attending Drexel University, I wrote my master's thesis based on clinical research I conducted at the Scheie Eye Institute in Philadelphia, PA. The thesis was related to the effects of prism glasses on the satisfaction of diplopia patients. The research was presented as a poster at the 2016 North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society (NANOS) conference, with me as a 3rd author. For the past year, I have re-enrolled at Drexel University College of Medicine to take graduate-level classes such as two semesters of Biochemistry as well as Graduate Neuroscience and a medical school course titled Medical Neuroscience. From May 2021 to January 2022, I conducted spinal cord research at Drexel University College of Medicine, where I studied the functional interaction between locomotor and respiratory networks in the spinal cord of adult Sprague Dawley rats. This research was presented as a poster with me as a second author at the Experimental Biology conference held this past April at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The abstract was then published in the FASEB Journal a month later in May. I have experience teaching elementary and middle school students as part of outreach programs affiliated with Drexel University College of Medicine. The different science related topics I helped teach was related to biology and neuroscience.
