If you're looking for assistance for the SAT, Varsity Tutors can help you prepare by enrolling you in a Richmond SAT course. A course could give students an edge when they sit down for the test. Even though college is still over a year away for most students taking the SAT, it's always a good idea to give yourself as much time and preparation possible to maximize your chances of performing at your best, especially if you're considering a first-rate school such as the University of Virginia or Virginia Tech. Most students coming out of Richmond Community High School, Thomas Dale High School, Douglas Freeman High School and other area schools will take the SAT, and given the amount of quality applicants that come out of these and other Virginia secondary schools, you're going to need a high score on the test to help your profile stand out from the pack.
The SAT is a very thorough and time-consuming exam - likely longer than any test you've taken at an area school. You'll face three hours of testing at a minimum, with an additional 50 minutes added if you choose to respond to the optional SAT Essay prompt. Over the course of the test, you'll be required to show much of the knowledge you've covered during your first three years of high school in reading, language, arts, and mathematics. When faced with a test of this magnitude, it's totally understandable if you're a bit unsure of yourself. If you're interested in getting some extra help preparing yourself for the exam, Varsity Tutors can help you start getting ready by helping you find an SAT tutor or a Richmond SAT class that works with your daily schedule and gives you time to review at a pace that makes sense for you.
What will be discussed in a Richmond SAT prep course?
When you take the SAT, you'll face three required sections: Math, Reading, and Writing and Language. Should you choose to attempt it, you'll also have an optional Essay. Here's a bit of a deeper look at what you're likely to encounter on the SAT.
You'll have a total of 80 minutes on the Math section, which is broken into two distinct parts: one of which allows you to use a calculator and one that forbids the use of a calculator. On the calculator section, you'll face 30 multiple-choice questions and eight grid-in questions, which require you to fill in the numerical answer on the answer sheet provided. You'll have a total of 55 minutes on this section, giving you a little over a minute per question.
When you face the non-calculator section, you'll have to work a little faster, as you'll have just 25 minutes to tackle 20 questions, 15 of which are multiple-choice and five grid-in questions. In each section, you'll face questions related to algebra, problem-solving, and advanced math. Combined, these two sections will give you a score of 200 to 800 on the Math portion of the SAT. There's no guessing penalty, so if you're running out of time, it's always better to take an educated guess if you can and take a random guess if you really don't know the answer.
On the Reading section, you'll have 65 minutes to answer 52 questions, all of which will be multiple-choice. During the Reading section, you'll be presented with a literary passage, at least one historical passage, a passage related to the social sciences and two or three passages related to scientific concepts. Based on the passages that you're given, you'll have to infer the meaning of the piece and the arguments presented, use context clues to identify tone and style and draw conclusions about what you've read. Given that you'll have between five and seven passages to read and only 65 minutes to answer questions, you'll have to quickly identify exactly what it is that you're reading and put your understanding skills to work. This section will make up half of your overall Reading and Writing score, which will be somewhere between 200 and 800.
You'll also face the Writing and Language section, which will comprise the other half of your Reading and Writing score. You'll get 35 minutes to answer 44 questions in this section, leaving you less than a minute per question. Like the Reading section, your multiple-choice questions will be based on passages provided on your test, and you'll have to answer questions related to their arguments as well as their grammar.
Finally, if you choose to attempt the Essay, you'll be given a prompt and will have to respond to it. Here, you'll be asked to assess the author's argument and evaluate their persuasive abilities, and you'll receive a score ranging from 6 to 24.
No matter which section you'd like to improve on, a Richmond SAT course is a great way to start.
How can a Richmond SAT class help me prepare for the test?
During an SAT class, you'll be collaborating with other prospective SAT test takers who want to get a top score on the test, and you'll receive assistance from a qualified instructor who has taken the test before and knows how to prepare for it. You'll be able to decide whether you'd like a two-week or four-week class, with classes starting every week to maximize your opportunity to find one that works with the time you have free. During the class, you'll be able to discuss preparation and concepts with other students and bounce ideas off each other to get ready for the test. If you'd like some one-on-one instruction, that's available too. All you have to do is ask your instructor.

...they find confidence in the material they're studying. I tutor a variety of subjects, including essay writing, grammar, and Italian; however, my favorite is Algebra. Many students come in hating numbers, and it's always a thrill to see that attitude change. My interactive tutoring style encourages not only learning comprehension, but also confidence in the material and the student's skills. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, writing, and making art.... My teaching philosophy focuses on the student. Each session should be tailored to the way a specific student learns. I want to make sure they not only understand the material, but that they have confidence in their abilities to use it on their own later.

In addition to that, in college, I volunteered at an elementary school tutoring a 4th grade student and a kindergartner student, focusing on reading and writing.
