The SAT courses meet live online, so you can also connect with other students and share ideas and suggestions with each other. That kind of collaboration is known to improve retention of information. There's no downside to signing up for a Boulder SAT course, and basically, your entire future to gain if attending the class leads you to earning a score that helps to get you accepted into the college or university of your dreams.
What topics will we study in the Boulder SAT class?
Although each class leader is free to conduct lessons in the way they see fit, most classes will begin with an overview of the SAT structure and content. In class, you'll go over things in more depth, but we'll cover some of the basics here. First, the highest possible composite score on the required sections of the SAT exam is 1600. This is made up of your score from the Math section (up to 800), and the combined scores from the Reading section and the Writing and Language section (800 possible combined). If you take the optional Essay section, you'll earn a score from 6-24, which isn't part of the composite score but will be reviewed by any colleges or universities who receive your SAT results.
The SAT Math section is further separated into a portion you can use a calculator for and a portion you can't use a calculator for. The section gauges your analytical and problem-solving skills, your algebraic skills, and your ability to understand, analyze, and solve mathematical equations. You're allowed an hour and 20 minutes to complete this section.
In the Reading section, you're provided with reading passages that may include tables, infographics, or other non-text information. Each passage is followed by a handful of questions allowing you to demonstrate your skills in reading comprehension and reasoning. You have an hour and five minutes to answer the 52 multiple-choice questions in this section.
The Writing and Language section tests you on your facility with the normal conventions of the English language, such as grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure. You'll need to prove you can discern the meaning of words through context and improve reading passages to be more clear, precise, and effective. This is a shorter section, with only 44 multiple-choice questions to answer in 35 minutes.
While the SAT Essay is optional, it's important to know whether the colleges or universities you're applying to require you to complete this section to qualify for admittance into the major you're interested in. For the Essay, you have 50 minutes to read a passage, analyze the author's use of evidence and reasoning, and write a response evaluating their argument and persuasive abilities. Your opinion isn't necessary; you are merely responding to how effective the author's arguments are.
As your Boulder SAT class reviews each of these subjects in much more depth, you may find that you're not catching on to some concepts or a particular skill or two as quickly as the rest of your classmates. You don't need to worry that your only options are to hold back the whole group or to just try and figure it out on your own. You can request one-on-one time with your teacher anytime you run into an especially challenging concept. This is just one of the many things SAT courses offer to try to do everything possible to help you in your SAT test preparation.
What are the benefits of taking a Boulder SAT course?
There are a wide variety of advantages to studying for your SAT in a small online group with an expert instructor. In addition to what's already been mentioned above, the opportunity to learn specific test-taking strategies that are targeted towards your strengths can be extremely useful.
Time management is an important skill because each section is timed. To see how an instructor might help a small group work on time management, we'll use an example. Say you're in an empty classroom at Fairview High School or Peak to Peak Charter School during your study hall period while meeting with your Boulder SAT class. Further, let's imagine your instructor is administering a timed Reading section that closely mimics an actual SAT exam.
Some classmates will likely finish with plenty of time left. Others might finish by the skin of their teeth, and maybe you and a few others run out of time. Your class instructor is knowledgeable about the reasons different students might need to increase their pace. They may take a few minutes with you and each student who didn't finish to quickly diagnose the cause of the pacing issue. Then they can offer a few different suggestions aimed at each of your strengths.
You can put these strategies into effect on your next timed section. If they work, you can practice some more on your own until you've reached the optimal pace. If not, you can try some other techniques until you find the one that works. Your classmates can share what worked for them, and you may come up with additional options. As you can see, this isn't really something you could do studying on your own. There are other test-specific things your instructor can demonstrate, but this gives you an idea of how studying in a group class can be so valuable.

...and work to address him or her as an individual. I help them develop strategies so when they are alone and facing a difficult problem, they have the foundation and confidence to work through it by themselves. Most importantly though, I make sure my students laugh at least once during a session - when they are having fun, seeing the bigger picture and exploring the subject in their own way, the learning naturally follows.... My teaching philosophy is to look at the bigger picture, find a way that works for you, and find the fun in it.
